My son is 12 years old and his eczema is at the joints behind his knees. My friend has eczema at her neck and his son 18 years old also has eczema at the joints behind his knees.


We have been trying lots of products for eczema but a NO NO to steroid cream as these are the Local side effects of topical steroids:
■ Skin thinning (atrophy) and stretch marks (striae).
■ Easy bruising and tearing of the skin.
■ Perioral dermatitis (rash around the mouth).
■ Enlarged blood vessels (telangiectasia).
■ Susceptibility to skin infections.
■ Disguising infection e.g. tinea incognito.
■ Allergy to the steroid cream.

For people with eczema, their skin are extremely dry so they cannot use normal bathing / shower products.

Lately we found out a Japan brand shower product meant for hydrating skin and it works well.

Next, after bath, must apply cream. And we have been using a USA brand steroid free cream which works well too. We have to buy this from USA and it is only S$20 for 70oz (198g).

I used Elomet cream prescribed by the dermatologist at National Skin Centre. It causes skin thinning when used for quite a while. But it works extremely well.

Does it contain any steroid? How many percent of it if it does?

My skin has developed some form of rashes now that the weather is getting hot and humid. The itch is killing me.... :frustrated:

My son and I had eczema. If you problem is bad, do see the dermatologist at skin centre. I find those OTC non-prescription cream and even those from the GP does not help. The dermatologist gives a stronger one. But you see, what you want is too stop the itch and then maintain the skin using moisturizer. The scratch-itch cycle can only be stopped if the itch stop first.

Depending on the area, if skin is hard (sometime hardened due to eczema), the doc give ointment like metasone). After it gets better and softer, you use betasone, a cream. You also have to buy some good quality moisturise like Physiogel, to keep the affected area soft and moisturizer.

My boy and my eczema always threaten to come back and we mostly use moisturizer to solve the problem now. We use the steroid only when it gets bad again. Those steroids from the dermatologist are very effective.

Though I agree that topical cream containing steroids has its adverse effects, it sure does the trick in relieving the itch.

I'll make a visit to the skin centre and have the dermatologist take a look at my condition. Hopefully, he will prescribe something with minimal steroid, perhaps 0.1% or lesser. Right now, yes...I am holding back the urge to scratchhhhhhh....

Hi Harlequin / Nutty mum,

The texture is like lard with a strong animal \"lard\" like scent - still bearable and it doesn't stay for long.

It doesn't sting like medicated oil though. Just imagine applying a thin layer of lard.

Thanks... never thought of that! My kettle's heating element is a flat bed \"metal\". not sure of it's plating (not the keep-warm type, it's a cordless full glass kettle).... how do we find out the material used for plating?
