Hi experts. Need help in this question with models.


Samuel is 3 times as old as his brother now. in 10 years time, their total age will be 48 years old. How old is Samuel now?

10 years
S=3u+10
Sb=u+10
Total = 4u+20=48
4u=28
u=7

Now
S=3u = 3 x 7 = 21
Samuel is 21 now

Alan, Benny and Calvin have 120 stamps altogether. Alan has 5 stamps more than Benny. Benny has twice as many stamps as Calvin.

The common method used in P3 maths is Systematic Listing (SL).

Please use this slide (P5 question) as an example), the approach is the same.

A quicker way is to use the concept of “Excess and Shortage” .

In the first scenario, the excess is 6 tarts.

In the second scenario, there is a shortage of 4 tarts.

In order to give each of her neighbours two more tarts, Mrs. Chua needs to bake 10(6+4)) more tarts.

Difference in number of tarts given to each neighbor ------ 6 - 4 ------ 2

Number of neighbours ------- (6+4)/2 ------- 5
