I don't know whether it is common practice or not but I heard some girls schools will have some students invited to have tea with principal of some top girls school? I think I read somewhere in KSP.Just wondering, is this common practise? Unless the child is well known in sports or arts or academic competitions, how will secondary schools knows of the child?
Anyway, :congrats: your son has obviously put in lots of hard work . -
My gal dsa last yr into one of the top sch. Her PSLE score is about 20 marks off the cut off point. So far she is coping well with both her study and cca. Her tests so far are within the average score. However, there are some classmates who look down on dsa student and refuse to be in the group with them in case they drag down their score. After you get into your dream school, things may not be happily ever after. I did not factor in her emotional problem when I dsa last year. A decision which I regretted.

Hi Love IPad,
We always decide what we think is the best for the child and often neglect the emotional need of the child. I’m like that too. -

Hi Love IPad,
Your daughter don’t need to let any of her classmates know that she’s 20 points below cop. Don’t have to tell her classmAtes her actual Psle score. Don’t let those secondary school classmates of hers talk about her, bec it"ll affect her emotionally. They don’t need to know. -

Would think that the names are possibly recommended by the primary school based on academic performance and good behaviourJust wondering, is this common practise? Unless the child is well known in sports or arts or academic competitions, how will secondary schools knows of the child?

Hi Love iPad,
I guess the next step is probably to try to help your gal emotionally. Easier said than done but we have to try what we can.....
My DS is also sec 1 this year....DSAed too. While his PSLE score is above the COP and is one of the highest in his allocated class, he has come to realise that it din represent much. I have always reminded him that PSLE score is just a number that combines many factors - syllabus/content + effort + luck (a different question would mean he might not be able to answer and someone else can) + performance on that day. PSLE is not able to test actual knowledge and when comes to Sec, things are quite different already.
So far, DS can perform in his usual subjects like Maths, Eng, Chin....but his other subjects are so-so. But he was impressed and admitted to me.....some of his classmates are soooooo knowledgeable, creative, vocal and able to present well (and apparently, quite a number of them below COP) So seriously PSLE does not represent everything.
As for the groupings, I guess such situations will happen in every school, just sooner or later. Even if those kids dun based on PSLE scores, in Sec 2/3/4, some will still choose their group members based on their sec sch results. Even my P6 dd has experienced that in P4 & P5 while doing projects. Tho it sounds depressing
but I will treat it as reality of life. Since we can't avoid it, better to teach our kids how to handle it positively when it happens to them. The other advice I would give my kids....this is the time one will get to know who can be real friends.....a blessing in a way...... And of course the other advice to my kids......improve and prove themselves first, and later, if possible, they can choose to reject those same people lor

Interesting sharing above about how "DSA"ed kids cope with Sec 1. Probably to parents, who are thinking of the process, we might think… get a CO first then think about it. But true… it’s important to consider the emotional needs as well.
Do they usually group the dsa kids in a class that differentiate them?
During this year (P6) meet the parents session, dd’s teachers kept emphasizing to parents that PSLE is just a national exams and a score for placement purpose. What matters to them most is the kids’ attitude, desire to learn and learning behaviour which they felt that matters more as this will carry them through life. So PSLE to them is nothing. It’s just a placement but for the kids to continue to do well, they must have the right attitude and behaviour. -

This is true in the long term when kids starting to know who is who via dsa sports, academics, MEP, GEP, high scorer. Just as a matter of time.
Study hard lor. -
