Bread mould is a fungi. So it will get its food by decomposing the bread and absorbing the nutrients.

        Dear fellow KSPers,

This question (13b) came from my P3 gal's 1st Science test paper.

I find that the teacher's answer can be made clearer by further highlighting that the goldfish mass will increase faster as more food is given. Or an alternative answer could be: \"The more food given to the goldfish, the faster it will grow.\" or somewhere along this line.

In my opinion, the usage of the word \"increase\" doesn't seem quite appropriate in this case as it usually applies to a comparison of the same subject before and after. In this question, each goldfish is given the same amount of food everyday so there isn't any increase per se.

I would greatly appreciate your views pls. TIA!

for p3, the teacher’s answer should be ok. The qn is what is the relationship between amount of food and the weight.if the food increase the mass incrase. no need to go deeper. They tested that the kids can compare and make a conclusion.just my opinion from my son’s experience.

            Hi,

This story is an interesting illustration of the perception of the concept “measurand”.

One perception is “By increasing the amount of food, will the mass of a fish increase?”

The other perception is “By increasing the amount of food, will the mass of a fish increase faster?”

In this case, probably, only “Andy” is unambiguously clear in his mind what he is measuring for or what the “measurand” is.

Therefore, if this question is to test a student ability to compare and infer than both answers should be acceptable.

            Regards

Many thanks smartmommy & oldschool for your replies.

I’m just thinking aloud here and wondering at what level the expected answer should be and whether it clearly demonstrates the relationship between the amount of food and the mass of the fishes.

If the expected answer on this relationship is, more generally, an increase in the mass of the fishes, will pupils be able to give the same answer if this question is the other way round? ie. if pupils are now asked to draw a table showing 4 fishes giving different amounts of food, will they be able to show higher rates of growth for those given more food.

pls dun arbish me if I’m thinking way too much here… 😜

Hi there, my boy has got part a correctly but how to get to answer part b?

                Thank you

A scientist found a new species of animal, X, in the river. He described it as follows:
                It has fins.
                It breathes using gills.
It lives in water all its life.
It gives birth to its young.
It has a slimy and leathery skin.

                (a) Which group of animals do you think animal X can be classified as?
Ans: Animal X can be classified as a Fish

                (b) Explain your answer in (a)
