Crescent Girls' School

Quentalerauf:
Hi Quentalerauf,Hi. I felt that I should give some assurance here. I was a canoeist throughout my 4 years in Crescent and I was an average student, most of my teammates were. At the end of the 4 years, all of us were eligible for JC (but I chose to go to a polytechnic). I am currently in my final years of my Chemical Engineering degree programme in Technische Universität München.
When I first started out, I did very badly for my exams (it was always just enough for me to continue to the next level) because I was getting used to training intensities and fighting to concentrate in class. It was to the exent that my parents threatened to pull me out of the team or transfer me to another school. Canoeing was my life and Crescent was my other home, apart from Macritchie, and upper secondary was still a struggle. My teachers IC helped us a lot. They always reminded us that we were students before canoeists and on non-training days, we will sit together and have informal consultations for any subjects we were weak in.
Managing training and my grades was a tough feat but I came out a more disciplined person. I think most of us did, regardless of our CCA. By the way, all my canoeing teammates are currently in universities, local and abroad. I must also add that none of us retained in Crescent, we came in and graduated together
Thank you for your assurance. My DD is still not chosen for any competitions yet, do you have any tips that I can pass on to her? When she is sitted in the front of the JK should she just paddle with all her might or should she first be wary of capsizing cos whenever she tries to steer her partner behind her keeps yelling to just paddle???? :slapshead:
On a seperate note, I opt for the Samsung, the school seems to be promoting it more and technical assistance is another issue. -
Hi,
Need advice from students/ parents. My dd is targetting Crescent Girls for DSA this year. I’ve the following questions :
* Does anyone has experience with Band DSA?
* What is Crescent Girls school hours like? What time does it start?
* From the bus stop at Alexandra road, how long does it take to reach the school?
* I heard there is a bus from Dhoby Ghaut to Crescent girls and it only takes 15 mins? Is that true? -

Hi MMMHi,

My DD is in sec1 and we stay near Hougang/Serangoon North area. Distance to School was also one of our major consideration for short listing of sec schools so Crescent was initially not on our radar although I have heard that it is a good school and very IT savvy. However, after she got her results, we gave it serious thought and decided to put it as 1st choice.
School assembly starts at 7.20am (I think) but my DD insist on reaching school by 7am. I drive her to school and it takes around 25 mins via CTE, Orchard area to Tanglin. She takes public transport home and she has CCA twice a week ending 6pm. No complaints from her as she very happy there.
There are two buses from orchard mrt area, depending on which bus stop u go to - 132 and 111 ply along Tanglin rd and stop right outside the school. From north, shd be faster route than taking MRT all the way to redhill. -

Q2: We have to reach sch by 7.21 but assembly starting at 7.30. Sch ends at 2 usually with Mon ending at 2.30.
Q3: U mean RedHill? it's only one stop, but we need to wait for the bus for long sometimes. Walking time is about 7min on average but my friend n I walk fast so it's about 5min for us.
Q4: Bus 111.
Hope this help. ^^ :rahrah: -

Dear All,
Thanks so much for sharing. It is very much appreciated.
It's very positive as a parent to read about happy girls in the school. That shows that the school has strike a good balance in terms of good academic performance, cca and happiness in learning in school. What more can we ask for. It is important to feel happy with what one is doing. If you are happy, nothing is a strain despite the long hours. If you are unhappy, everything seems like a big barrier. My dd has said that she is not into highly competitive schools/ environment.
Personally I like the principal's look on the website. Her face reminded me of dd's P2 Cl teacher who was genuinely interested in her pupils and has a passion of teaching. That left a good impression and do hope she is the same in person.
Well... I amthat dd does well for SA1 and PSLE. We are waiting eagerly for DSA application for 2013. :xedfingers: that dd will be selected for audition and she makes it.

Hi genevieve08,
Thanks for your inputs.
Do they have school bus for secondary???
For band, you have to stay back 3 times a week. Is that 2 weekdays and 1 weekend? Or 3 weekdays? My primary kids currently have to do 1 weekday and 1 weekend for school band. As we are thinking of DSA, I've been \"cautioned\" of band being too time consuming as compared to other CCAs. Personally, I felt that I rather they spend time on band than at some shopping malls after school. In addition, it's good that they have passion for band. It is important to have passion for something.
How do you find the school band so far? Do you happen to know historically how many students they took in via band dsa on a yearly basis? :scratchhead: My kids love their current conductor and he is indeed amazing. The school is blessed to have him. Through him, they also heard positive things about Crescent conductor. During SYF, is band + school work still manageable? -

Hi! That's why it's a \"old girls' school\". As the above post, the school has high level of technology, the environment of the school is serene. Do you know we do our Fitt Run and NAPHA run around the canal? It's wonderful :). For the CCA, I'll PM you when I'm free.Dear All,
As we've not been to Crescent open house. Would like to find out the \"condition\" of the school. From the outside, it looks old, what about the inside? I did see some colorful/ vibrant pics on the school website. Is part of the school renovated?
What about the school band facilities?
What is the \"star\" cca for performing arts in Crescent? -

What is the \"star\" cca for performing arts in Crescent?I'm actually a student at Crescent now, and I would say that the school is actually in a really good condition except the design flooring haha but most secondary schools are actually the same!
The school band facilities are really good and the band has been performing really well! I am currently in Choir, and I would say all the performing arts CCAs are all really good but practices for all CCAs are tough and long hours too. I wouldn't really say there are any star CCAs because I believe every CCA puts in a lot of effort so it depends on what your child likes!
The school's open house will be in October so do drop by then!
