My elder boy has a very sensitive nose. He could detect what we just ate behind his back when we talked to himmy 9yo ds has the same problem since 3yo. once he move into another room with different temp and/or humidity, the sneezes start and thereafter blocked nose. he's always breathing thru his mouth.
at 4yo, i brought him to kk. they did a prick test (negative for food allergy and normal allergens) and recommended sprays into his nose but dh was worried that those steroids may affect his manly growth. said we rather put up with the symptoms as he may grow out of them.
we got used to him using up tissue papers like his father owns the mill.
recently, at 9yo, he still hasn't outgrown it apparently. we brought him to a doc at paragon medical center. he wanted to laser his adenoid. we even booked surgery. on second thoughts we went back to kk. doc there totally poohpooh surgery, said it's unnecessary and solely for financial gains. he convinced us that those nasal sprays are totally safe even for long term use. we cancelled surgery.
for 2mths since on nasal spray, his symptoms has lessened. tissue paper usage has also eased.
we have to go back next month for a skin prick test to confirm what kind of environmental allergy he has.
At first, we thought that was cute. Until he started to be sick all the time.
In the end, he was put on nasal spray and oral Clarinase for 2 years.
After which, I brought him to see TCM for another issue - peeling skin on palms n soles.
Now he is 16 years old. On n off when the weather turns too cold, he will start to hv a little blocked nose which we give relief in the form of Zyrtec D.
My hubby and I are not tall, only 1.6m and we belong to the small built type. My elder boy is now 1.65m tall with very lean body (can see his 6 packs), weighs only 47kg.
When we first started to use nasal spray then, we were also apprehensive about steroid usage in the long run.
I do not know whether my elder boy is considered to hv suffered from stunt growth due to the 2 years of nasal spray. But I do know, if we did not persist with the treatment then, the consequences might be worse due to congested nose leading to disrupted sleep.
My younger boy has a more sensitive nose than the elder brother. Was hospitalised twice due to excessive mucus when he was a baby. He does not want to be on the nasal spray treatment or the ventolin treatment (cant talk sense into him, sometimes). So he takes Zyrtec-D every morning. We also realised that he cant eat too much peanuts and sugar in any form.
We do not eat deep fried food at home. Occasionally we eat such food when we dine out.
I believe exercise will help greatly. My elder boy is healthier eversince he started sec sch in which PE is more intensive than those sessions in pri sch.
Generally, to improve the nose sensitivity issue, we hv to hv exercise+diet+medication all carried out at the same time. -
Gd Morning
Anyone has any good TCM to recommend? Thank you -
Different people have different triggers even though the manifestations may be similar, so it’s important to identify the triggers. If you just avoid everything that everyone suggests, life can be unncessarily restricted. My older daughter went through several years from about 9-13 yrs when she had constant runny nose and cough due to post-nasal drip during several months of each year. We were living in a country with seasons, and it turned out that tree pollen was the trigger (we discovered by empirical observation!). So she took daily loratadine (generic name for Claratyn) during those months as she couldn’t avoid the trees! Somehow, it stopped happening after those few years.
I used to suffer with the same symptoms from childhood (I was asthmatic too) until early adulthood, and developed severe eczema as well in my 20s. It was because of the eczema that I had the skin tests and discovered that my triggers were mainly dust mite and dust of various kinds. Again, after a few years of steroid creams and oral antihistamines, the severe symptoms stopped and now I only get mild symptoms now and again.
So do try to identify triggers - could be environmental (what you breathe or touch) or dietary. Sometimes, you can find out by closely observing what sets the symptoms off. Once you know, you can try to avoid. -
