For the schools your son submitted in the S1 posting, go to the school websites and look for any pages on \"PLD\" (Personal Learning Device). Different schools are using Widows, Chromebook, or Apple (sometimes iPad). There should be an option to order a school prescribed device sometime in Sec 1.
Dear parents,
DS going to sec 1 in 2023. I’m wondering whether they need a laptop for school use or desktop is ok? I’m using company issued laptop, and when it is faulty, I get a new one at work, and pay a little to get the old one for home use, especially during HBL 2 yrs ago. But it is a macbook air (old one). Does anyone know secondary school need to use computer, and is macbook ok or must be windows based? Or I can keep to current arrangement. DS has an ipad mostly for reading news and his games. -

Every secondary student would have their own Personal Learning Device (PLD). You can wait for the school's arrangement for his PLD.

Meanwhile, an old laptop should be sufficient unless he has computing-related lessons (school will usually provide the minimum/special requirements).
All the best -
Oh i see. Ok thanks!
I’ll wait then. If it’s ipad then i can save. Otherwise I would think it would be heavily subsidised or can use certain education funds. I was thinking to go look at carousell or hunt for some deals in time for 12/12 sale. Better wait for posting first.

MOE should get attractive rates due to bulk tender. High-end specs are unlikely since they are not necessary for e-learning.

Students can pay through their Edusave accounts.

Surface pro was also one of the computers. Yeah. Wait for bulk tenders.

Can I ask if a Macbook Air M1 is good enough to play games like Total War or Diablo, I’m not sure what version is the latest game now? I am thinking of buying one for my DH for his bday.

the kid’s (sec1) school requires IPAD gen9 10.2in as the PLD. however, some assignments/HBL can only be completed on a windows device !

Yeah, that sucks. iPads are not just not \"all encompassing\" as hoped

So in most cases, we still need a standby PC/notebook. -
I wonder what the percentages (across all secondary schools) are for PLD as:
-Windows Tablet
-Windows Laptop
-Chromebook
-iPad
-MacBook
I find the tablet is nice to carry to school (light and easy to use in class), but it seems like the kids would often like a laptop at home when they need to do more extensive work. -

My son carries a humongous laptop to and from the university... and he seems ok with doing so. I guess that beast can be used for gaming... :skeptical:

My DS’ MOE-fully-paid-for PLD is a no-frills Chromebook. Not extremely light but it’s compact and sturdy, and does the job since it runs on Windows.

Chromebook runs Windows? I think you mean Google Chrome

It's running Windows? I thought Chromebooks were using Google's own OS? I had one a while ago (fine for web browser and email) but the Office apps on it at the time were terrible. That being said, I find that many of the kids use Google's office products instead of Office (or I guess you can use Office.com).

Hmm…at least it looks darn similar to Windows to me (as opposed to MacOS). The Google suite of software is all fine for them:

- Google Chrome web browser (better than Microsoft Bing)
- Google classroom (to share and collaborate; teachers post messages/assignments/documents to their FSBB classes)
- some pseduo Word, Excel and PowerPoint (no complaints so far)
- Gmail for all email correspondence within their school mailing lists -

Yeah, fully functional for what the kids need. If you put a gun to my head, I would pick a laptop over tablet, but I guess all of the schools have their reasons.

One thing about the pseudo Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or even the Office products on Apple OS, sometimes the file conversions are messy if sending externally to someone that only uses Microsoft. Not sure if this has improved over the years. Regardless, for internal use any of these are fine.
