      Maybe you can put up some \"Found\" notices nearby? Or in the newspaper? Someone may be looking for it.

      We have already filed a Found record with SPCA. But so far, no one has reported any lost pets 😓

      DH doesn’t believe the dog belong to our area. Very likely the owner drove all the way here to dump it so that the doggie can’t recognize its way back home.

      @Vinegar, As for the implanted microchip, we have also informed AVA. They will try to track the owner within the next 3 days, provided the owner registered with them. If owner did not register with AVA, then having this microchip doesn’t really help.

        Obesity itself is a reflection of neglect. It means the owner did not bother to take it out for walks, and just kept food there over a long period of time.

        I would think the dog was not regularly bathed as well by the last owner. Since it can barely walk, it is unlikely that it wandered off and got lost. If anything, it just wants to plonk itself down in a safe house, judging by its reaction to a leash. If it had been wandering around for some time, it would have been slimmer or dehydrated or have some surface wounds given its relative haplessness. So my guess is it was recently abandoned and there is no point putting up flyers.

        You may still want to look up the microchip. There is a possibility that it had wandered off from original owner and was found and kept by someone else who was not prepared for the commitment.
        While I chose to believe it lost its way and its owner is looking for it, DH shares the same sentiments as you that the dog is being abandoned.

        Actually vet also said the dog seemed to be suffering from arthritis. The teeth also not in very good condition. Each time we bring it for a walk, I notice it gets fatigued easily and will lie down after walking for a mere 5 mins. The limbs tend to shiver too 脚软 🤷

        @MP/Esteema,
        DH said SPCA told him frankly over the phone that they have limited resources and one option is to put the dog to sleep if no one claims or adopts it. Best option is we foster it. 😓

        @Janet,
        I know. 你越讲,我的心越乱。We want to keep but at the same time, there are so many other considerations. I myself only 50kg+ and the dog is already 40kg. It is huge and I am quite scared of it due to its large size. However, I see that DH is getting more and more emotionally attached to the dog.

        @phtthp,
        Given that it is obese, I am not sure if it has other hidden medical problems :xedfingers:

          lee yl, looks like it is going to be a difficult position at your side. Hope it is a lost dog and someone will come forward to claim it.. or, ask your dh if he has confidence in raising a (big) dog 😓 or anyway to ask around see if there is anyone would like to adopt it?

            Within 2 days, alr \"emotionally attached\"? He must hv love & longed for a dog of his own. My DH averse to attachments to doggies as he knows hv to part with pets & it'll be hard to handle.

            You've alr got yr answers with this GR apparent health issues & those that may be comingbon due to its obesity. I doubt it'll run off or drag you along its weight with doc's indicative arthritis.

            SIL's family used to hv a dog the entire family dotes on except that as it grow old, it started behaving very oddly & the older siblings decided to 'send' him far, far away in their car. Seems this fellow sense of smell & probably directiongot it appearing before the family in a matter of 2 mths. Maybe SIL's pet didn't hv arthritis so easier & more determined. 🤷

              Lee_yl, I would consider keeping the dog. Golden retrievers are probably without exception the gentlest, friendliest dogs you can find. And a senior golden retriever will probably sleep most of the day anyway. Short walks a couple of times a day, good food (no pear or apple - it’s full of sugar and he’s already obese!) and you might just find yourself with a great friend for the next five years or so. You did a great thing in taking in him, and honestly I believe if no one comes for him, he’s meant to be yours. If you can handle the vet bills, I would keep him.

              Re the distraction to children - no one can study all day, right? Pets are good for kids. Make them walk him around the estate a couple of times a day. At 7 or 8 years old, with artithitis and obesity, he’s not going to be bowling them over or pulling and dragging them along. He looks like a beautiful boy!

                Esteema, no offence, but that’s terrible! They obviously didn’t dote on him that much if they can abandon him in old age. In all honesty, I would rehome it myself, or if it’s ill and can’t be rehomed, then worst case is to put it down, rather then than just drive somewhere to abandon it. I could never live with myself to know it’s wandering out there, wondering where it’s family is. Dogs have feelings too.

                  Certainly no offense at all fried chicken. SIL was just a kid then when her older bros did what they did & that was in the 70s. Concept of rehoming wasn't there yet for you & I, guess. :?

                    Do you or your dh has any prior experience with dogs?
                    You are in a situation whereby whether you keep or don't keep the dog, your girls will get affected as they are already emotionally invested.
                    What you have done is a beautiful thing. Whatever the outcome (whether you keep or rehome the dog) , this will remain in the memories of your girls/dh in many many years to come. 🙂

                      I see. Guess it was a different time then. All this talk of abandoned dogs made me go give my two monsters a big cuddle each! Haha. I’ve had dogs since I was 8 and can’t imagine life without one or two!

                        Parents can worry too much.

                        Children can be quite resilient.
