Can I check with you all.. Sec1 need to start tuition immediately?
Let me offer a different viewpoint from the other mums. I started my DS on Math & Sci tuition in Dec after getting the results. They were his weak subjects in pri, so i expected them to remain weak in sec. A headstart would be no harm (since hols nothing else to study mah). I also went thru some algebra with him at home in Nov prior to that. He picked up the content well, school reinforced, come home do assessment books, tuition centre has topical revision & mock tests before the exam periods. I throw him exam papers to do also.

Becos i know these 2 subjects will determine his future streaming combi allocation. Even though i hate this system, i do what i can to let him have more options in his future. He is not a science & math person (better at humanities) but will all this extra help he could get A1-B3 consistently in sec 1. It boosts his self-confidence also.

I didn’t want to make the same mistake i made in primary school (not emphasizing too much on academics). I felt that he is at the right maturity level now to understand that he has to work hard for his own future. After he has tasted the disappointments, the limitations in choices, and the ruthless taunting from ex-schoolmates, it serves to drive him internally as well.

For those progressing into sec 1, maybe adopt a wait n see attitude. See if can cope during the common tests etc? There is still time to catch up later when help is required? Anyways streaming only started end of sec 2 so got time to seek help later. The transition to sec 1 might prove overwhelming for some from 4-8 subjects plus heavy CCA commitments so yah tuition maybe taking away more deserved rest the kids need with longer sec Sch hours.

If my child went to IP i would do that. But O level track has very short runway. Plus sec 1 eoy result is impt if want to try transfer school. That is my take. Of course must see the child & family situation, travel time, CCA commitments etc. I chose to take slmkhoo’s advice and start DS on a regular consistent after-school schedule from the beginning (of Sec 1; i failed to do this with much rigour in primary school), rather than let him fail his first WA and do corrective fire-fighting recovery later. Some parent friends chose to do that.

Thanks chief. Maybe also coz I kept telling her b4 results out that getting 8pt is actually not that easy one lor. The exam b4 prelim still ok can get 8pt even some at the unlucky spectrum of the AL range. Then comes prelim..we all errr already. So need to moderate her expectation. I asked her few times any chance of exceeding the minimum/base AL coz I was worry..and those words like mommy you are insulting me arh..I m dumb but not that dumb etc ..in a jokingly manner..no offence to anyone. She likes using words and actions to make us all laugh..ah..going to northern part of china...washing some thermal wears coz going to be colder there.

Yeah. It's really not easy getting anything below AL10. I salute all those who scored AL8-10 and all those AL5-8 people are not human 😂

But remember... PSLE is just one measure of a person's capability. It doesn't say that a person is stupid just because the person got AL10 or above. It is people who uses the grade to sort students into secondary schools that make it seem like it is. PSLE is the measure of competency in the Primary school subjects, just like the color of belts measure the competency of people training in Taekwondo, or the grades used to measure pianists as they progress. One might not be good in PSLE, but there's always something out there that one excels in.

Life is really about seeking out what one is good at, and then following your dream.

I agree to start kids on the right foot & get them steady n a consistent schedule & build their time mgt ability. I’ve been closely guiding them in primary sch as I see it as impt commencement of school life. Once the young child get the hang for studies (homework, reading up, etc), u wld hv given them the desire to pursue knowledge as an interests & studies fall in place when the interests to learn is there.

Once they’re settled in CCA, schedule their academics around it. Adjust along the way. Takes awhile but they’ll get there if the child perseveres. Then it becomes 2nd nature. Do guide as they’re only in tweens & then gradually let them flex their ability to manage themselves & manage their studies well.

DS had no tuition for the Y1 but was really full-on with 2 CCAs, a 3rd language and regular subjects. In fact, DS took on 3 internships fr Y3 and then fr Y5 he had 3 CCAs (one fr his continuation since Y1, one Science club & then Christian Fellowship Leadership). He did take Chinese tuition mid-way to navigate HCL at secondary level. Thkfully he did well to score A* & he didn’t need to worry abt his 2nd language fr Y5. Was initially worried but he assured that he can handle & manage his time.

Make sure yr child make choices base on their interests & they’ll take responsibility to excel. They’ll make friends & motivate each other as they progress thro the academic years. Once yr child gets to enjoy secondary school, I’m sure she’ll make extra effort to roll in with the action & pickup responsibility & want to achieve.

Your view point is not wrong either. The runway for O level vs IP is 2 years shorter. O level is also a major exam.

The mistake you made when your DS was in primary actually led him to mature earlier. He now fully understands the importance of good results and how they open more doors/opportunities. The tuition fees will not go to waste because he is very willing to go. Better than parents pay hefty tuition fees, yet kids go there and switch off because they think they are being forced to go for tuition.

Parenting is by trial and error. We just try to do things we will not regret. Want to send for tuition, can afford, just send!

I m abit worry of kids getting too dependent on tuitions. I tried to understand the O Chem&A.Maths and I find that can actually study on own. Just need to revise more to pick up speed maybe. I don't see reasons for not able to understand..Maybe I haven't gone deeper into the subjects 🤷 but dd never accepted my gesture..she says she has her own ways to understand and we have different ways. I will try to pay more attention to dd on her new journey. Will try to keep up with her and get her additional help when needed. It is indeed trial & error parenting.

Just to ride on & add my perspective.

PSLE is only a snapshot of a child’s capability at a point in time. If a child did not perform academically well at that milestone, he/she might be ready to pickup speed by O levels stage & some might catch up or surpass those who did well at earlier milestones.

As parents, we are always on the lookout for slow or fast learners to provide extra support or provide resources to enable their learning, which shld expand beyond academics. A child needs to grow emotionally, which reasonable progress in academics helps them hv a wholesome/balance view of themselves. If they fall behind, we guide them towards their strength & provide scaffolding for them to spring with confidence from thereon. For some kids, more guidance might be required till they find a strong footing, but we learn to let go & let them grow their own muscles of independence in navigating their teen world towards adulthood.

I rmbr a frd whose 1stborn was with mild autism but ‘supremely bright’. He wants loads of independence as he sees & learn stuff a lot faster than even adults, except he’s still very reliant on physical help & emotional guidance. At age 16, he still hv problems dressing up or tying shoe laces. He’s got a helper just to attend to his needs. But he got perfect scores for his IB & the father went over to Yale with him & got a Mexican nanny there for him. Dad drives him to uni daily whilst mum cared for 2 younger siblings in SG. A younger boy as brilliant in study & personal progress w/o extra tuition, whilst sister is more artistic & did very well for studies but all had to be supported by home tuition & Learning Lab tuition. She’s more laid back.

Every child is different. Some need to be prooded, some want to be free to spread their wings w/o interference. As parents, we assess their limitations & quietly give support (s’times hv to support them w/o them feeling we’re meddling).

I hope next year is the beginning of being free fr parenthood gradually. Only step in when they want help. Start treating them as emerging adults.
