Coping with PSLE for parents
-
My ds is the one who asked for xtra lessons for Maths & Sci. I asked him if the xtra lessons will make him more stressful or will it boost up his confidence? He says as he is targeting on these 2 subj, the xtra lessons will boost up his confidence. On the other hand, the free tuition from my relative for his CL2 will further add on stress to him. So I decided to stop
the free tuition & insert 1 more session for his Maths & Sci.
As for chicken essence, he has been taking once a week since Jun. I'm still thinking if I shld increase to twice but I'm not very comfortable in changing his lifestyle at this critical moment. Afraid his body may not be able to take it.
He just told me tis morning that he woke up last night twice ard 1am & 3am. I'm also worried that he is too stressful but whenever I ask him to rest & relax, he will say this is the last week to zoom into his weak areas and he won't have a 2nd chance after the exam... Really heart pain to see him like this
Spore education system is really cruel

hmmm...my boy doesn't seem stressed. And having spoken to other psle parents, it seems like they are more stressed by the moms' constant nagging than the actual exams!!underthesea
Your son is stressed, his mind still active, thinking of exams so can't sleep.
I only give chicken essence on exam day or weekends. I am afraid too much essence will be heaty as well as can't sleep at night.

As parents no matter how much anxiety, we must avoid nagging our kids. This is the last thing they need. Instead, it pays to encourage, motivate, emphatise and talk to them.
I have observed over the years that parents who remain cool, confident and communicate daily with their kids, the latter perform way above their parents’ expectations during PSLE. Two weeks prior to PSLE, kids should be ready. Prefably, they should finish their revision by 9.30pm and parents can take the opportunity to spend time with them for approx 30 mins to inquire about their readiness and always give encouragement.
Good diet, ample sleep are critical during this period. By 10pm, kids should retire. Before that, pray for increase wisdom to remove uneccessary carelessness and ability to understand difficult questions. There’s no need to have even the slightest worries as kids are able to detect such signs which may hamper their performance. Remember is your kids actual performance over 4 days vs-a vs their entire cohort.
PSLE is fast becoming the replacement exam for 0-level as far as high ability pupils are concern. Over the last five years the performance of the entire cohort can best be summarised as follows(estimate):
English A/A* 43-44.5%
MT A/A* 80-81.2%
Maths A/A* 43.5-45%
Science A/A* 43-44.7%
Strength in EMS and reasonable grade for MT would enable a pupil to achieve T-score of 250 and above(Top 10%).
The above is my observation over the last several years which I hope would be benificial for parents in this forum. -
I cant wait for PSLE to be over… I am more stress than my DD but needs to act cool in front of her

:thankyou:
English A/A* 43-44.5%
MT A/A* 80-81.2% ??? really? you mean such a high percentage?
Maths A/A* 43.5-45%
Science A/A* 43-44.7%

Hi INNOVATE, please pardon my ignorance. Can you please explain how do I read the followings :
English A/A* 43-44.5%
MT A/A* 80-81.2%
Maths A/A* 43.5-45%
Science A/A* 43-44.7%
Does it mean the % of students getting A/A* is 80~81.2% of the cohort? :?

Yes, the percentage is an indication of the cohort’s attainment of quality passes in the respective subjects. Generally, a pupil who has achieved a commendable performance has a grade profile of AA/A A or better.
Obviously, there are exceptional cases. -
So it should be more difficult to obtain a high aggregate if there are more pupils attaining quality passes right? For MT if there are 80~81.2% of the cohort attained quality passes then why is tat reasonable grade for MT is sufficient for 250 & above T-score?

Not neccessary. A pupil who does very well(A* A* A*) in EMS needs to score around 75 marks(A) for MT, can achieve T-score of 250-260. Those who score two A* and one A instead of three and with similar mark for MT, their T-score should range from 250-254.
