crescent has been in band one for five years already,so why isnt it a hot choice???? i mean schools like mgs and scgs and cedar dont exactly get band one
i am a newbie here, but please do note that CEDAR is the only school that NEVER EVER missed BAND 1 in the ranking of School with O level students,,, SINCE it started in 2003 (i think), almost all other Schools like Victoria School, St. Nick, and even MSG missed at least 1 time (drop to 2 or 3) of course... the girls school did better than then Boys schools... VS is the better one already i think 5 years consecutive already... i think... SJI just attained band1 only Recently and only 1 time only (at most twice), and Catholic High fluctuates also btw 1,2,3 bands -

I agree. Ultimately the common goal is to ace in your A-levels and get into your choice course of study in the Uni (local or overseas), isn't it? Does it matter if you enter enroute RIJC or HCI or some ABC JC?hardworking:
My friend’s son scored 25+ and couldn’t get a place at HCI. He went to his second choice which is a ‘band 1’ school. He scored 7A1s for O levels and went to RI (JC). If now, he would have gotten into one of the new IP schools and missed his opportunity of studying at RI. It is messy.
i find this rather contradictory.
1. This shows that even if the boy can't make it to HCI after PSLE, eventually he is still up to par with those who have taken the IP route. Going to a non-IP sch did not disadvantage him significantly or at all. In fact, had his band 1 sch been IP, he may have had more opportunities to explore other avenues of interests.
2. But you seem to have cast a negative light on this upcoming 2nd batch of IP schs -> going to these schs will deny the boy the opportunity to go RIJC.
These 7 new IP schs are likely consistently band 1 schs. They may not lead to RIJC or HCI, but i don't think the quality of IP-education offered will be any inferior. They may just be different but different is not wrong.
Every sch has its own merits. We should cheer for 7 new IP schs, giving our next batch of P6 more choices. Hopefully the current Sec 1 and 2s can benefit too. -
For Banding of schools, search the MOE website.
Here's the one for 2009:

As you can clearly see, SCGS is in Band 1 and for many years. -

There should be not much difference which ever route one takes as long as the child can prove himself. But for slightly subtle case like you are aiming to go to an Ivy League university...then the extra projects and experiences you get in IP will help you alot....because score alone is not sufficient to get one a place in Harvard.

NOTE: all schools r listed ALPHABETICALLY ok... EVEN IN SAME BAND
so Anderson will look in front of Victoria School for that matter & Catholic high look b4 MGS .... band
all in PDF format... just google for earlier ones... using words like O level Band 1 , MOE etc.... should have for 2007,2008 ones too... -

he can still do exactly the same thing now; go to a band 1 school > score 7A1s > RJC.

Even if you are in one Ip school, you can still transfer to another IP during sec 3 or 4 or J1.

These new IP schools have a few independent schools and their students typically do not qualify for the MOE scholarship accordingly to psle score. By approving these expensive independent schools but not other \"cheaper\" government schools but of comparable academic standard, wouldn't the government be perceived of benefiting the richer elites more?
don't think so
government schools have been lacking in certain areas of school management ability (except for RI / RGS which are independently managed byt gov't funded). i dare not mention other names here. if you are free, go browse those threads on Sec 1 DSA for certain government schools and compare with those government-aided schools ....and you will see the difference based on parents discussions
hence to approve who for IP application must certainly look into whether the schools are ready in terms of ability to manage, and whether they have the resources to manage.
if you compare St Nick / MGS with say SMSS or BPGH...there is still a big gap. Having ambition to become an IP is one big step of faith on the part of the principal to begin with
