Hi all,
My DS is in P3 this year and he has been attending CMA for a few years. He is currently at mid Level in CMA (I can’t recall which level).
I find that while his computational maths is ok, my DS face challenges when attempting ‘problem sums’.
I am thinking of when is a good time to pull him out of CMA and put him into more syllabus-related enrichment maths class (that teaches problem sums) when the time is right.
Just wondering if anyone out there who has experience to share.
Did your DS/DD finish all the way till level 1 in CMA or you switch him/her over to ‘problem-sum’ based tuition, after some time in CMA? If yes, at which Primary level did you make the switch e.g. P3/4/5/6?
Thanks in advanced. -

I agree that it is time to 'move on'. At P3, the work load would have increased, and if he hasn't the right foundations to tackle problem sums and continue to spend time drilling in computation, he is going to fall behind. Problem sums require different thinking (logical) and it is different set of skills. In any case, there are also computations involved in problem sums and as long as he is still in touch with Math, his mental arithmetic skills will not get rusty - maybe relatively slower than before, but not of significance, unless he is an active competition participant. Also, if he isn't already dealing with 3-digit summations/subtractions at CMA, which in P3 they are already doing in school, you may want to let him proceed to practice on 3-digit computation on your own to brush up on his mental arithmetic - cos if you rely on CMA to do it, you would need to complete a few more books of the 2-digits, which may take quite sometime. Of course, there may be lingering thought that he hasn't 'officially graduated'. If so, you can always consider going back during the holidays to brush up your child's accuracy & speed. Like learning many other things, if you take it as a life-long skill and interest, you won't give yourself so much pressure and learning will be more meaningful.Hi all,

If your child is already accustomed to using mental arithmetic, and not relying on other methods of computation, the skill is likely to stay with him. If you stop at the point when the child hasn't developed the skill and habit of using mental arithmetic, he is likely to fall back on other methods of computations, which totally defeats initial efforts of taking up Abacus (with the ultimate aim of mental arithmetic 心算)
Anyway, these are just my personal opinions -
my twins are 4yrs old now. is it too early to start abacus?
they are now at mid 2nd term of their abacus lesson. taught by 3G in their cc 1hr per lesson once a week. up till now they yet to start to learn abacus, most of the time is colouring & writing numbers. or maybe for N2 abacus class is like tat? i really clueless about it. i feel quite waste to pay $210x2pax per term for writing & colouring only.
i dun know to let them continue or withdraw from the 3rd term?
or let them join CMA for mental arithmetic?
can pls give me advise? i really headache!!! -

I'm sorry, but it sounds like a waste of time to me if your ultimate aim for enrolling them is for learning Abacus and Mental Arithmetic.my twins are 4yrs old now. is it too early to start abacus?

CMA will be faster as they have programme for kids as young as 4 year-olds. My own child started at 4. Not colouring, but image recognition which facilitates the development of visualization skills - the ability to hold an image in one's mind for as long as he/she could, whilst being focused. This is a very important skill that the student develops overtime and it is good to start young. As they get older, the number and sum gets bigger and more complex (times, divide and decimals), and their ability to hold the image in their minds will be stretched. This ability is very powerful and it actually benefits other forms of learning in the long run. it is a right-brain activity - or rather, mental arithmetic is a right-brain activity.
As for writing skills, there are numbers to write too, and you can also do that on your own with your kids at home. -
Hi all,
I would like to send my son to cma kovan centre. Can someone send me the referral code please? Thanks! -
Have PM you
