Hi
My niece is taking her PSLE this year, I’m at a total lost, my sister pass away from breast cancer about 1 and half months ago. My brother in law is in a very bad shape and so is my niece, my sis had always had high hopes on my niece, she picked up what school she wished she could go and what she had hoped she could be. Even though we know we are losing my sis but we realised no one can be prepared for this kind of departure, no matter how much time you were given.
I just wanted to know if its logical to ask my niece to stop schooling for this year? to take PSLE next year, as i’m not confident enough to help her through this year. I’ve been posting on this forum asking question about the 1 school my sis really hope my niece could get in but it wasn’t very good and i’m quite sure if my sis knew about this she wouldn’t want to either, the point is… is it possible? As i’m really clueless about the education system in SG now, I look at my niece’s yearbook, there are terms that i don’t even understand… like what is SH? i know what is HOD, VP, P.
The point is i wanted more point of view to see if stop schooling is a good choice for my niece, i know she is upset but she is trying to stay strong for her father and me. I heard her crying alone in her room almost every other night. And it pains me so much. And when i heard something regarding the school that my sis was planing to send her too… made me even more unsettling, I feel that its my responsibility to make sure my niece gets the best if not the closest to best education that she can with her PSLE results. Maybe i’m selfish, but i can’t cope i can’t deal, and i cannot imagine if i’m feeling that bad… how would my niece be feeling… I can feel that she is only forcing herself to study hard, to put a smile on her face, she is only 12 this year, not a kid but not an adult i think taking a break would be good for her, at least for now.
I hope someone can advise me on this. Regarding the school i tried to get info but no avail on this website the only reply i got was to remove the post i post about what i heard from my niece regarding that school that she heard from her cousin. I only posted to find out if it was true, as it was apparently from my niece’s cousin who heard from someone from school. i needed a confirmation, but instead i received a msg to remove the post. I think that even if the post was true i wouldn’t have not want to send my niece there as i think its unfair to blame the whole herd cause of 1 black sheep, i just wanted to know if its true or just gossips that were spin round and round but my views has since changed as the vibe i got from the school wasn’t very good.
sorry for digressing, main point is still whether letting my niece to stop schooling until next school year start is a good idea at all?
Thank you -

Which school did your sis want her girl to go to? How is her P5 results? If she did well last year, she should be fine this year. -

Hi Concerned_careConcerned_care
Which school did your sis want her girl to go to? How is her P5 results? If she did well last year, she should be fine this year.
I suggest going to school to speak to her teachers, the school counselor etc to explore your options.
If your niece should stop school for a year, who is available to care for her? What will she do to occupy her time? I think it is important to think through this first. I do not think being 1 year behind in schooling is a big thing in the whole scheme of things. The important thing is to keep the momentum of studying for her. If she did not do well in P5 because she had to cope with your mother's sickness, the 1 year break can be used to revisit P5 work + do some P6 work without the added stress of PSLE. But I think it will not be good if she takes a break from studing totally and then come back to pick up P6.
Your niece is really fortunate that her mother has a sister who is so concerned about her. This transition time to teenage is a really traumatic time, for a girl especially, to loose her mother. The grief of loosing a mother who so obviously loved her so much as to pick a school for her even while dying must be overwhelming for your niece. Having you as a harbour is the greatest blessing she can have now. All the best to what you are trying to do!
