      Sorry one more q.

      John and Ramesh had an equal number of sweets at first. After John bought another 8 sweets and Ramesh lost 12 sweets, John had thrice as many sweets as Ramesh. Find the numbers of sweets each of them had at first.

      Can anyone help?

      Anyone know of any good Math Tutor? At this rate, think my gal and I will die at the hands of this subject!!!

          Solution:
          Twice of Ramesh's sweets is 8+12 = 20 sweets. Each of them had 20/2 +12 = 22 sweets at first.

                Do we always presume that 12+8 belongs to the 2 units? if this is so then 1 unit is 10 sweets, so both should have 10 sweets each at first. Why 22 sweets? Sorry I m slow in maths.

                    Since you know that 1 unit is 10 sweets now, but the question ask how many sweets do they each have at first..
                    Ramesh lost 12 sweets, and she had 10 sweets left now..
                    Therefore, 12 + 10 = 22.
                    Ramesh had 22 sweets at first.

                      But several assessment books state the place value is just thousands in this case. Which one is correct? Thousands or 8000? Very confusing.

                        I was going thro a question in an assessment book and the answer given was just 'thousands', which meant it wanted the 'place', essentially different from '8000' or '8 thousands' which is the 'value'.

                        It also means that the question 'What does the digit '8' stand for?' is different from 'What is the place value of the digit '8'?'.

                        Ya, I have seen thousands in most of the assessment book. ????
