My younger son has just been infected with HFMD. He has ulcers in his mouth. When he moves his lips, he will cry. He can only drink milk and take porridge. His hands and feet have some less noticeable red dots. Hope he will recover soon.

Oh dear hope that your son gets well soon. Make sure that he is taking in enough fluids. Children really suffer when having HFMD 😞

He has to stay at home for 10 days, then follow by doctor’s consultation before he is allowed to go back to CC. He has no fever, but lost appetite because of his mouth ulcers. Doctor had prescribed an antiseptic pain relieving oral gel which helps him to take his milk. He refuses to eat other food and has lost weight. He sleeps most of the time after taking his medicine. We feel very helpless. Doctor said there is no direct medicines for HFMD. How fast he can recover depends on his immunity.

It is true that there is no direct medicine. Even when my boy was hospitalized due to HFMD, all the doctor prescribed was panadol. But he was put on the drip which really helped him to recover, because he could not eat or drink anything. My hubby and I had to take turns to stay with him all the time at the hospital.

It is good that your son can still drink milk. Hope that this period will be over ASAP for you.

That's totally not true. A person can be infected with chicken pox more than once in their life. As long as your immunity is low & you are in contact with a person with chicken pox, chances are you will get it again.[/quote]Actually, you don't get chicken pox again once you have gotten it. That's because the virus is always in you - it's just that your body has built the necessary suppressors to keep it from activating. So technically speaking, you cannot get reinfected again since you are already infected.

However, when your body immunity is low, the chicken pox virus will re-emerge, not as chicken pox, but as shingles, which is more painful and dangerous. I know because I still have the scars from the shingles I got a month before my A-levels. *ouch*

However, the information that I have gotten from KK hospital doctor is that a person can get infected with chicken pox again. DS was hospitalized as doctor thought he has chicken pox in his lung. When he was hospitalized, dd & me have just recovered (we still have the scabs at that time) & dh had his 1st sign of dot on his body. That was when the doctor told us that as long as our immunity is low, chances are, we can get chicken pox again.

I just did a quick goggle. It is very rare for a person to be infected with chicken pox again as the virus stays for life which provide immunity. Me & dh fell into the rare category. Ds did not have chicken pox in his lung. It turns out to be bronchitis. We were all suffering from flu type A when dd caught the chicken pox 1st, with both set of grandfathers hospitalized, the health issues took a big toll on both of us, hence the 2nd time chicken pox. 😢

To be more accurate, it’s not that the virus is still in your body. It’s the antibodies specific to that virus.

When a virus enters the body, the body produces antibodies to combat the virus. When the virus cells are all dead, the body retains a collection of antibodies to this virus. So if you get infected with the same virus again, you are "immune"… unless your immunity/body is weak, in which case you don’t have enough defences against the virus, so you will fall sick again.

Flu is the same - it’s also a virus. The problem with the flu virus is that it mutates (you always read about this in the media, different "strains" of a virus, that’s what they’re talking about).

When a flu virus mutates, the current antibodies in your body don’t recognize it, so it will infect you again. Your body will have to produce new antibodies to fight the new mutation. And so the cycle continues.

This is the reason why there is no "cure" for viruses - only your body can produce the cure (antibodies) specific to the virus. This is why a strong immune system is important.

Another good thing to know is that this is also how a mother can pass immunity to her baby - during pregnancy, and also through breastfeeding.

My younger son is much better now. He has begun to take in more food as his ulcers are healing. A great relief but when he is fit to go back to his CC, it is time to worry again. Now, we are hope to boost his immunity. Any suggestions?

Well, you can give him Multi-Vits, Vit C, and basically eat healthy.
