To be more accurate, it’s not that the virus is still in your body. It’s the antibodies specific to that virus.

When a virus enters the body, the body produces antibodies to combat the virus. When the virus cells are all dead, the body retains a collection of antibodies to this virus. So if you get infected with the same virus again, you are "immune"… unless your immunity/body is weak, in which case you don’t have enough defences against the virus, so you will fall sick again.

Flu is the same - it’s also a virus. The problem with the flu virus is that it mutates (you always read about this in the media, different "strains" of a virus, that’s what they’re talking about).

When a flu virus mutates, the current antibodies in your body don’t recognize it, so it will infect you again. Your body will have to produce new antibodies to fight the new mutation. And so the cycle continues.

This is the reason why there is no "cure" for viruses - only your body can produce the cure (antibodies) specific to the virus. This is why a strong immune system is important.

Another good thing to know is that this is also how a mother can pass immunity to her baby - during pregnancy, and also through breastfeeding.

He has to stay at home for 10 days, then follow by doctor's consultation before he is allowed to go back to CC. He has no fever, but lost appetite because of his mouth ulcers. Doctor had prescribed an antiseptic pain relieving oral gel which helps him to take his milk. He refuses to eat other food and has lost weight. He sleeps most of the time after taking his medicine. We feel very helpless. Doctor said there is no direct medicines for HFMD. How fast he can recover depends on his immunity.

It is true that there is no direct medicine. Even when my boy was hospitalized due to HFMD, all the doctor prescribed was panadol. But he was put on the drip which really helped him to recover, because he could not eat or drink anything. My hubby and I had to take turns to stay with him all the time at the hospital.

It is good that your son can still drink milk. Hope that this period will be over ASAP for you.

My younger son is much better now. He has begun to take in more food as his ulcers are healing. A great relief but when he is fit to go back to his CC, it is time to worry again. Now, we are hope to boost his immunity. Any suggestions?

Well, you can give him Multi-Vits, Vit C, and basically eat healthy.

you can help the recovery along with two additions. there is an antiviral syrup that you can give and you can rub a paste onto the ulcers directly to speed up the healing.

not really direct medicine, but ways to treat the symptoms. this was what was prescribed by our doctor.

My boy was hospitalized. The ulcers are all deep in the throat, impossible to reach.

The PD did not prescribe any antiviral syrup. What exactly is this ? I have never heard of it.

It is best to educate your son not to be put his hands in his mouth, and always wash hands before eating.

My neighbour’s 3 year old boy is having HFMD. He was infected at his CC.

I just saw him coming back from outside ! His parents brought him out even though he has not recovered.

Those staying around my area near Jurong Point, please be extra careful.

Perhaps they were coming back from the clinic or grandparents' home. In the unlikely event that they went out for food or fun (it's hard to eat and have fun with HFMD), then they should be labelled as inconsiderate. We should try to keep our sick children to rest at home until the infectious period is over.

His grandparents are in mainland China. My mother said that she has seen them bringing the child out a few times. His condition is quite mild, not exactly in pain. But then he can still infect other kids 😞
