Leeven, If your ds gets 230 in psle and the cut-off is 260, he will still get into the school by DSA. In ACS, he might be offered the O-level instead of IP program

Anyone has actual experience with DSA via band???

My dd is P5 this year while my ds is P4. Both are very passionate about band and I’ve intention to let them try DSA via band so that they can continue with band.

My thoughts are though the CCA might time consuming but if the kids have passion, it’s better to have them spend time in the CCA than hanging out at some malls with friends???

I want to understand what we are prepare for. They should be going for SYF this year.

Hi all, I am new here and I guess I will be active once the DSA period starts. HCI has yet to release their DSA dates. I am so afraid that the dates will clash with RI again (like last year)… Keeping fingers crossed…

First, you have to find out which schools take in under Band.

For HCI, there are actually 2 phases for DSA (according to last year's format). My question is :? --- if someone qualifies for phase 1 but registers for phase 2, will it be a problem? Thanks in advance for any kind replies...

Yes, we already have some idea on the schools that take in band. Eg. Maris Stella High School, TKGS, PLMGS, etc...

But the question is how to prepare for it???? I also read about audition. Also, is attending SYF good enough? What kind of results are they looking for? I realised that P5 is a drop from P4, etc.... so I wanted to hear from those who have experienced in this area.

My niece managed to appeal into a JC this year based on her band involvement. But it's her sec school conductor who is coaching the JC she went for. So she simply had to do an audition. She kept assuring me that it's easy as that.

I also spoke to their conductor and he said he knows the conductor of the targetted school and can help. But I wanted to be prepared and not caught off guard.

Maybe the conductor can help you prepare? Any exam grading for the instrument? THey have to be competent in it for the school to want them? I have no experience with band. My ds went under chinese orch. His portfolio included key position in his pri school orchestra, high-score exam gradings, competition and 2 SYFs in pri school. They had audition plus interview. Audition was to perform a piece of their choice and sight-reading.

JC is generally easier under DSA/appeals than Sec 1 from what I hear.

For AEP, please refer for criteria at:
                      http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/programmes/elective-programmes/files/art-elective-programme.pdf
Raffles family also can DSA via art.
Please refer to respective Sch website for DSA criteria. Differs from Sch to Sch.

For EL DSA for top IPs, High D in UNSW/ICAS competitions helps but many are also rejected so no guarantee. Maybe winning national/international essay writing competitions may help. The usual stages are IQ tests, academic tests and interviews, and assuming your kid is non GEP, seats are limited via academic mainstream so you can imagine what a tough route. Chinese DSA - sadly many who made it are China Chinese lah! Unless your kid is winner of national/international Chinese essay writing calibre and top 30 winners of Bilingual Olympiad (to DSA HCI and NYGH), again chances to get in via Chinese DSA to top IPs is very slim. Sorry if I paint a tough scenario but it's the reality if your kid is a mainstreamer trying to DSA top IPs via academics. If your kid is in SHHK BICEP program, it helps for IP schools like DHS but not for HCI/NYGH. Some friends' kid's went for HCI camp in p5 also did not get CO. Mainstreamer better bank on PSLE.

Totally agreed with Snow Crystal DSA academic for mainstreamer is v tough. Even for other subjects esp Math. The child must be the top math Olympiad before they r given a chance , d chances for a gold cert sometime is still not good enough for d top schools .

This year is Dragon year , competition will be intense , so worry for my DS.
