DSA 2012

Herbie:
It is difficult to DSA to RI academics but there are students who do. Some of our forummer's sons did. Guitar falls under Music domain, not Academic?
May be for rgs/nygh it is possible to dsa via academic but for ri may be abit tough.
I rem a boy who tried to dsa to ri via guitar but was rejected and instead he was accepted by a renowned music sch. -
Herbie:
Yes, my DD's seniors and my friend's DD were all successfully DSAed into RGS and NYGH through academic.
ruohoo97:
Am I right to say that no point for mainstream students to try academic DSA, even their SA1 result is 90% & above? They will not be given a chance to sit for the test nor interview? Academic DSA is for GEP students only. Mainstream students could only apply for Sport DSA.
No, Not True.
My Gal has Mainstream Classmates who dsa thru Science, thru Maths, thru EL in RGS.
Also Saw there is 1 Gal who dsa thru Arts in her Batch.
Yes, mainstream students DSA to RI is very, very difficult. Based on last year result, only a handful(less than 10, I guess) mainstreamer DSAed into RI via Science, Math, English and MT. Mostly were GEP students and Sports.
Again parents and students have to set the expectation right.
Remember last year, RI mainstream DSA written test was scheduled the same day as HCI mainstream DSA interview/written test. The parents and students were so stress that they have to decide which one to choose.
Let see this year what will happen.
The \"WAR\" already started as there were more then 5 schools had their Open House on the same day. -
Anyone can share some experience with HCI DSA? My DS got smops gold award, and his SA1 overall is well above 80% (math is 95), however according to his tution teacher, it’s not good enough to DSA to HCI. And we have already submitted the online application for DSA to HCI, according to the online information, only short listed applicants will be receiving the email for test. (but for the other schools, including RI, as long as you submit application and pay test fee, you will be eligible for the test anyway). On the other hand, one of my friend told me, as long as you can get silver award and above in SMOPS and has reasonable good school result, chances of DSA to HCI or NYGS will be quite high. His DD got silver and DSAed to NYGS 2 years ago. I am very confused now…

Kiasucy:
What about HCI? Do they have such cut-off in the past as 80% also? Should think so ya...
Base on what I know, the answer is \"YES\". HCI does has the 80% cut off for GEP boys. But if you have SMOPS Platinum Award or BiCEP might help.
How about the GEP girls? Any \"cut-off\" for successful DSA to RGS/NYGH? Seems that many GEP girls have done quite well, so will the benchmark be pushed up to 80+%?MotherHen:
If you have read last 2 years posts you will understand that RI only issue CO(confirm offer) for those GEP boys with P6 SA1 result above 80%. (last year there were students who scored 80.x only offer a WL)
In summary, if a GEP boy P6 SA1 result between 77.5% - 80%, most likely he will be offer a WL(Waiting List). Below 78% most likely will be rejected.
If you consider DHS, they have the 75% cut off for GEP students.
I guess currently no one will be interested in other schools besides the THE BIG FOUR. -

Is you DS GEP? Gold Awards might have some advantage. 2 years ago the standard might be different.
Please refer to the following link

There are about 80 students awarded Platinum and 100 students awarded Gold. Do you think how many CO would HCI given to SMOPS Platinum and Gold award?
I think for mainsteamer DSA, HCI will consider school results, SMOPS, interview & written test and other achivement.
As compare to RI, HCI has higher chance for mainstreamer get accepted by DSA. -
GoodDad:
Thank you. My DS is not GEP student and his math teacher pointed out, for smops top 200, more than 60% are GEP students.papertree:

This year, RI will be relised , if they choose not to offer to the top mainstream pupils, most of the top pupils will be accepting offers from HCI/NUSH or even DUMH and they will be no appeal after accepting the offers. Personally I feel RI or other schools should release data regarding DSA. e.g. how many applicants applied, how many GEP/mainstream/sports students accepted, etc. There are so much speculations among parents, teachers and pupils. It did cause confusion and wrong perception of the school.
Plus this year RI and NUSH selection camp (2nd round) are on the same date, and I checked with RI teacher, not possible to change the date. Make a wise decision if lucky you have to. -
yukilei:
Totally agreed.
Just to share, my DS & his classmates have been talking about this DSA. Many of them will automatically choose RI, HCI & NUSH. Not sure if it's being influence by parents. Have not heard any of his classmates looking into other schools. So sometime, it's not the parents who want them to go to these schools. Some parents are checking info on behalf, so that we can have better ideas & can share such info to the kids.GoodDad:
I have been following this thread since 2010. I think this thread should change to
\"DSA to RI and RGS - 1st Choice\"
\"DSA to HCI and NYGH - 2nd Choice\"
\"DSA to other school - Look somewhere else\"
I think there are more sec schools to discuss about DSA. Why parents only want their children to go to the above mentioned schools?
Just to share, I knew few of my DS ex-classmates who has DSAed into HCI and RI and they are the bottom of the class now and feel very depress due to they were the best in their pri schools. One of them has failed his mid-year English exam and it was shocked to the parent and the student. They wouldn't transfer out due to DSA.
Please consider carefully. This may not actually what your children want.
Personally, if I can choose, RI is not my choice of school. There're too many \"cream of the top\" over there. There are so many GEP students, think about 180 of them. It's so competitive. I've heard one RI student telling me that his HCI friends are more \"lax\". When they went out on weekend, the RI student (maybe this is an unique student) will return home early to do his schoolwork or revision. But his HCI friends continue to stay out. But I thought this is suppose to be the way. Not studying throughout. The kids should enjoy schools & not bury themselves on books.
But again, for the kids, peers play an impt role. They tend to want to go to the same school. Guess as parent, we can only give them our opinion, ultimate decisions will be on the kids.
I knew one of my DS schoolmates, he was the top boy in his pri school, school team of a popular sport which had won serveral zone and national award and Head Prefect. He scored 26x for his PSLE and went into RI via S1 posting.
After 2 months he requested to transfer to another school which he is currently in. When he was in RI, he just an \"ordinary\" student, there are many \"Head Prefects\", many \"School team captians\", many \"top achivers\". He was just one of them, nothing special. PSLE T-Score 26x was one of the lowest in the class. -
GoodDad:
I think Gold award for mainstreamers will at least get a WL. So if you put HCI as first choice you will get a CO. That is why the SMOPS training package cost >$2000 :moneyflies: . Parents die hard must pay and try and Vendors arepapertree:

What about those who can't afford? Then can only hope for PSLE lor.
