All About Choosing and Buying Pianos

Find a good teacher who will teach the foundation properly and there will be no regrets. Teacher comes first before the piano in the budget category. That’s my take.

Anyone heard of this brand of piano? Harrison?

Hi
I am deciding between a W Hoffmann v120 and the Bohemia 123 exclusive. Both are upright and in the same price range and 120 in height. I was earlier looking at
U1 but it may be inadequate when DD decides to peruse beyond grade 8. I also prefer European make as the sound is mire mellow as compared to Yamaha. DD is currently preparing G7.
Anyone here has any comments about these pianos or have owned or know someone who owns one? Would appreciate your feedback. Thanks -
Hmm I’m not sure about the model, but my Bohemia upright grand piano is still in very good condition and sound quality. I agree that some European piano sounds warmer compared to Yamaha, perhaps you can bring your child to try out the piano. It makes a different when you play it together with the pedal especially.

Hi SnowieBob
How about the W Steinberg, are you familiar? Thanks -
Anyone can share the feedback for using Haliun HL125?

Is a 2nd hand Yamaha U1J (made in Indonesia) selling for $3k reasonable ?
any feedback on U1J ? -
How old is this piano and at what grade is your child?
If the U1J is 3-4 years, IMO still alright for the price. I think a brand new is about 6K plus. You have to consider if you are using it for long term or to upgrade later. Indonesia make resale value etc if you are using for short term.
U1 has limitations if you child goes to higher grade, which a U3 would have a much better respond for fast playing, feel etc. Of course a U3 has a different price tage.
For the amount you are paying, a brand new China piano would be roughly in the same price range or just slightly more. Explore the Hailun, or certain German brands but China produced which produces great sound. You have to try it out yourself and do some forum research.
I am also in the midst of purchasing a piano for long term. I have a set budget and shortlisted the pianos of our choice, ultimately, DD will be the one to help decide as she has to be happy with the instrument. -
thank you so much for your valuable input.
can you pls share which model have you shortlisted and the price and the location to get them ? -
Shaber, you’re talking about Wilh. Steinberg right? Sorry, need to double check as there is another Steinberg, initial is G Steinberg, and that’s a China brand. Back to W Steinberg, again, very much like many piano manufacturers, there is a top tier which is fully made in Germany, which is, of course, very well made. Solid work and solid, though heavier action. However they do outsource in China, these again have two types, one solely made in China using Chinese action and those made in China but using German action. My info dates back a few years, so not sure whether these have changed.
