While I had taught my child the elimination method to rule out (1),(3) and (4), does mould grow on 'living things'? I thought they grow on dead/rotten stuff. Bread is not a living thing too.

My other personal question is, why do mould grow on damp walls? Walls are not food.... :?: Need enlightenment here...Thanks.

Molds do feed on living thing. Some fungal infections of the skin are caused by certain molds growing on the skin.

Molds grow well in the presence of water and warm. As they are micro-organism and feed on any organic matter, any dirt/stain left on a damp wall will be adequate for them to thrive and multiply.

1. Does swordfish lay eggs or give birth to young alive? I found varying literatue on this. Has anyone here got a confirmed answer from school before?

2. If a question asks "what material is good for making raincoat and why?"
If the answer is "Plastic because it is waterproof". Is this good enough or need to add "and flexible"? Would marks be deducted if "flexible" is not indicated?

3. If a question asks "What material is good for making the window panes of a car and why?"
If the answer is "Glass because it is durable and transparent." but answer key has only "transparent". Again will marks be deducted?

4. Any marks deducted for grammar errors in Science?

5. Is poor conductor and bad conductor synonymously used or they are specific answers as poor or bad conductor?

If you are referring to painted walls, believe me, paint is food alright. It has many ingredients like pigments, fillers and latexes which makes it yummy for mould.

Have you noticed an old can of wall paint with mould in it?

for the raincoat question, I would think the main point is that it is waterproof. The flexibility part is something that should be taken for granted as one can't really wear something that doesn't allow one to move around.

same for the car question. Glass main property as compared to other materials is that it is transparent. If the school looks for secondary points, then it will be a can of worms, there's no end to the properties of glass and one can always link glass properties to car material requirements.

Need help with the following question:


Tommy spread a layer of wax on different parts of four similiar plants A, B, C and D as stated below. The was prevents the plants from exchanging gases with the surroundings.

Part of plant where wax is applied:
Plant A - Upper surface of leaves
Plant B - Stem
Plant C - Lower surface of leaves
Plant D - Upper and lower surface of leaves.

He watered the plants daily and placed them beside a sunny window. After a week, he noticed that two of the plants wilted first. Which of the following are most likely to be the two plants?

1. Swordfish or Swordtail? My child and me only knows swordtail. :oops:
2. For that same question, my child missed out 'flexible' too. He wrote 'waterproof and light'. Seems like cimman gave a good explanation on the primary answers, but I tend to tell my child to look at the marks allocation. If it is 1 mark, there are chances that the teacher is looking at 1/2 mark per point stated.
