beef stew

can you share your beef stew recipe?
is it necessary to brown the meat before cooking them? some days i just dont wish to do any frying so thought of throwing everything into a pot.
i tried a few western recipes but wonder is there a chinese or local beef stew recipe. the western ones have got too many ingredients which i am unsure which one i can throw out.
i know i can use different mean and veg but it is the sauce/gravy that give me problem.
so any step by step guidance is much appreciated.
cheers -
Better to brown the meat to retain the juices of the meat. I don’t have any local recipes. Would love to try one if anyone’s sharing.

I recently made beef stew. Bought beef from Fairprice. Didn't know they have parts of beef called \"beef stew\".
I dumped 500 grams of beef with 1 carrot, 1 large white onion, 2 average-sized potatoes, 1 stick of celery, 1 large tomato and 2 pieces of star anise... All into the slow cooker and water to cover the ingredients. Added salt, pepper and light soya sauce to taste. Didn't add dark sauce and corn flour to thicken it, because DD requested it to be soupy style instead of gravy, as she wanted to drink as soup, like Cedele's beef stew soup.
Taste was great, but of course nowhere near Cedele's... But at least it was made with TLC.... Tender loving care.... -
I go for convenience hence I don’t bother to brown the meat. I just dump selected veges and the meat and let it all simmer on low heat. Of course the veges go in base on their ‘quickness’ to cook. I don’t bother with the spices either as I like the aroma from all the vege and the fresh beef. For beef stew, to get a richer beefy taste, can add a tablespoon of Bovril or some beef stock.

For a chinese style stew I use beef shin and brisket, add to that oyster sauce, ginger, black peppercorns, garlic, cinnamon sticks, star anise and stock or sometimes just water. Sometimes I add radish.
