2012 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

I have been turning on more fans to improve ventilation. Getting him to drink more juices and water.
Apart from honey, vitamin C, cooling water, disinfecting the house daily (am doing this personally to ensure it is done properly - cannot rely on maid as do not know where she cuts corner), leaving the fans on to ensure good ventilation, separating them, any other recommendations?
Also anyone giving kids DHA/fish oils to improve brain function/focus? Do you find it helpful?
I give them the Nordic cod liver oil and vit C everyday. Don't know how long it takes to work though. Friend told me it doesn't smell that fishy and purer than Scott's. More ex too but contains DHA. Since we do not eat fish everyday, i guess it should be good.
Mornings, I make a cup of American ginseng to improve vitality. -
Thanks all for the info and advice. Her results is decent but a couple of marks below historical COP of dream school. She had been on an uptrend and hoping so much to peak then. But guess nothing we can do if it should unfortunately happen.

My child’s teacher called that my child is not focusing and disturbing in class. So, should I give him more work?

Is he normally like this? Is he under stress or he is an active child? Is he able to focus on his daily school work? You have to find out the cause first before you give him more work. -

Find out cause. Maybe you can sit with him and check if anything is bothering. With just 2.5 weeks to go, you can't rock the boat. -
My child told me that he is already trying his best but result still not improving. Really sandwiched in between the teacher and my child.

It is only 2+ week to PSLE. If your kid is not benefitting from class, why don’t you consider letting him stay home and you coach him? Are you able to do the coaching or provide him main pointers for the subject for revision and allow him to practise without causing too much unnecessary stress on him?

Hi,kay22:
I received a sms that the 2012 top school prelim papers will be ready by next week. Will any parents be buying for their kids to do? At this point of time (exactly 4 weeks to go), should we just focus on areas they are weak at or continue to do practice papers? :scratchhead:
2012 prelim??? :yikes:
That's fresh out from the oven !!
With just 4 weeks to go, I won't buy anymore.
Still have many sets of 2011 undone.
I can only speak on PSLE Maths,
and based on about 10 years' experience of teaching P6 pupils, and interacting with their parents.
Parents should only get the 2012 prelim maths papers if this will help their children BETTER prepare for PSLE, and NOT add more stress.
Generally, about 85% to 87% of P6 pupils will get a Pass grade for PSLE maths, which is easily the worst passing rate for the 4 main subjects.
Every year, many pupils will cry after their PSLE Maths paper, it is just a matter of whether this gets reported or not.
Thus it is usually a time of weeping and gnashing of teeth, and all that.
Every year, you should expect about 7 to 11 \"thinking, non-routine\" maths questions.
These questions will differentiate the A and A* pupils from the rest.
The ability to answer some of these questions correctly could also determine whether your child gets to his/her \"dream\" secondary school.
Some schools are better known for having \"more, new, non-routine\" maths questions in their prelim papers.
Thus some parents will try to get these papers, hoping that learning how to answer these questions will help their children better prepare for the actual \"non-routine\" questions in the PSLE maths paper.
A bit like \"spotting\" questions.
From the few 2012 prelim maths papers that I have seen, RGPS, NYPS and St Hilda's have some rather \"interesting\" questions.
Some of these questions look difficult, and MANY pupils will NOT be able to solve them within the time given, unless they have seen/solve similar questions before.
And if they have been taught, they will be able to answer some of these 4 to 5 marks questions quite easily, within 2 to 3 minutes.
But I should caution that some of the solutions that I have seen look rather tedious and incomplete; there are alternate, easier, faster methods available.
So buying the papers and just asking the children to do them on their own may not be ideal.
Parents will still have to help their children go through the solutions to these questions, or get their tutors/friends to help.
At this late stage, you probably do not need to do the whole maths papers, just try to concentrate on some of the more difficult questions.
Ideally, your child's maths teacher can prepare about 20 to 30 of the new, non-routine questions from this year's prelim maths papers, and go through the solutions in class, over the next couple of weeks.
All the best for your child's PSLE.
Cheers

I am so relieved to see the part in red. DS commented that the 2012 RGPS prelim paper was \"surprisingly easy\". He found only one thinking question in there which stumped him. He managed to solve it after time was up though. We're slowly working through the other papers.

Phew... I feel a bit better now.
