Eligibility criteria is only Grade 3 theory and practical.

But from experience with my boys doing MEP, I know that having only a grade 3 background would be quite a struggle for the child to survive in MEP.

What is the difference between music and higher music at ‘O’ level? I only heard that music at ‘O’ level cannot be used to replace another humanity subject. Is there somewhere we can read and find out more?

Heard from piano teachers and some students that it is a very tough subject even for those with music background.

Phankao, can share with us your boys’ background and how they are coping? My kid is Grade 7. From your experience, you think can manage?

Grade 7 should have no problem lah. Just study and follow the lessons can already. There's an additional listening component that the child needs to train up for in Year 1 & 2. Then followed by composing in upper secondary. If only grade 3 theory, how to cope, right?

My elder boy who was doing grade 8 at the time he entered Sec 1 had no problem coping. He managed with help from the school teachers and MEP is his best subject in school, so it helps keep up his GPA. My younger boy has grade 8 and was highest scorer but theory only grade 3, so he couldn't follow the class lessons which started off only with theory which doesn't interest him since he is more of a performer and is not good with western musical notation. He was happy not to continue.

                      Hi phtthp,

Sight reading is one of the component during the grade test.

In the exam, candidates will be given a short interval of up to half a minute to look through a piece of song and require to perform it for assessment.
