All About Choosing Piano Schools And Teachers

What???!!! So mean....
I had a teacher (a famous one) once who actually proclaimed in a lesson that I should stop learning piano because I started way too late and had formed too many bad habits and therefore I was unteachable. So, instead of analysing and helping me troubleshoot my problems, he just proclaimed I was basically hopeless; what an extremely encouraging teacher eh. Needless to say, the next day I requested for a change of teacher. -

Well, to be fair to him, he didn't ask to teach me as the institution assigned him to me. He has a stellar track record producing well-known students and he is very selective when it comes to selecting his own private students, so I guess teaching me must had been way out of his comfort zone. Can't blame him though, I was quite terrible (but somehow still miraculously admitted into NAFA) thanks to my self-taught regime.

Dear all,
I am going to start a paper analyzing various factors that contribute to poor learning and ways to rectify them. To this end, I am looking to accept students who have attempted grade 3 or above practical exam and scored either a fail or just slightly above pass (100-110 for ABRSM). If your children fit into this description or you know anyone who does, I will be more than happy to accept you and help you out. As a token of appreciation, I will provide discounted fees for 3 months worth of lessons.

My horrible experience with Piano teacher.
My daughter is current preparing for Grade 4 exam, she has been changing teacher with this Music school due to the high turnover. For the past 3 months, I have been checking with this young, unexperienced teacher on the progress of my daughter. All remarks are \" ok. She is doing fine, need to practice.. etc\" Just last Sun, in the middle of the class, my dd message me that the teacher refuse to go in the classroom. I went straight to the school and he tells me he cannot cooperate with my daughter and do not want to be her \"slave\" anymore.
:yikes: :yikes: :yikes:
After much prompting, then I understand from my dd that he has been scolding her for playing the wrong notes but she insist that that is how the Principle have taught her during some replacement lesson. My dd is also not comfortable that the teacher is physically very close to her. What I notice is that he has been sitting or standing pretty close but I cannot tell if there is any physical contact. He has also been telling her that he doesn't care if she pass or fail her exam but if she fails, do not blame him cos she cannot play his expectation. etc etc..
I confronted the teacher on this and he request me to change teacher with immediate effect. Claiming that since this is the case, he do not think he is \"compatible\" to my dd.   Even got the cheek to tell me to \"settle\" with the admin staff on the reimbursement of $ for that day.
I really doubt the music school actually screen their teachers. Not to mention, their fees are not cheap. I am definitely withdrawing my dd after 6yrs with them. Totally disappointed. -

That sounds terrible. Are your daughter is still going ahead with the exam? I I imagine it will be awkward returning to the school for exam although you have withdrawn her.My horrible experience with Piano teacher.

I consider that too but already paid and register so I will still have to proceed with the exam.
BTW, I got a quote from Freelance Teacher. For Grade 4, 1hr lesson $240 at my place. Is it on the high side? -

That is per month right? That is roughly the market rate for a travelling teacher with 2nd level diploma or degree with a few years of experience and decent track record.I consider that too but already paid and register so I will still have to proceed with the exam.

There is only one Hanon's book 'The Virtuoso Pianist'. The first 20 exercises are commonly given to lower grades for general finger strengthening, though Czerny Op 599 or Little Pischna have exercises that accomplish the same objectives but much more musical. -
thanks… Dreamaurora … managed to find it online for free downloaded… keke…

That sounds really bad. Your post reminds me of the time I went to check out a music school for Suzuki violin classes for my little one. When I asked the teacher to play something simple for my son, she played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star which my son did not know. I asked her to play Pachelbel's Canon in D for my little one instead, thinking that was a simple and beautiful tune that would definitely make him fall in love with the violin.
OMG, she was horribly out of tune. We ran out as quickly as we could. No way I am going to pay for a Suzuki violin teacher who can only play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star!! Never went back to that music school again. -

To be fair, there are many excellent teachers who have stopped practicing and do not maintain any permanent repertoire, though of course they are still able to demonstrate passages from pieces they are teaching if needed to.gar_gar:

Is a very interesting forum. I would like to share my opinion. I’m a piano teacher which I don’t have a diploma in music. I’ve been teaching for 14 years.
After so many years of teaching, I reckon be it qualification, experience, teaching method, timing and etc. most importantly is the chemistry between the teacher and the student.
1st- if there is no chemistry between student and teacher no matter how good is the teacher, the student will still lost the interest or rather need a push factor to carry on.
2nd- no matter how low and how flexible is the teacher willing to be or how enthusiastic the student is, the chemistry is still important in order to made the lesson fun and interesting.
However, as for the fees, I guess is varies and it depends on varies of reasons.
1st- etiquette of the teacher
2nd- transportation cost
3rd- experience and qualification of the teacher
Lastly, when a parent looking for a piano teacher or any other teacher, I guess it must depends on what are the parent looking for in terms of the teacher.
Good luck to all -
