I wonder why MOE website team hasnt yet come up with an online L1R5 calculator for O levels.

I searched and found an independent one but it requires self-input of the L and R and O subject grades, no AI check.

That’s why I feel the L1 R5 is very confusing for me. So EL CL or HCL can be used as R4 or R5? I thought EL or HCL only fit L1 and CL (being Not first language) can be R4 or R5 because it’s not the ‘prime’ language?

I may be wrong on EL, HCL, and CL. Hopefully floppy will log on again soon.

The following post has the JAE booklet embedded in it. Page 29 (PDF page 41) has English as first language, Chinese, and Higher Chinese all as \"O\" category. That's why I thought you can use either EL or HCL as L1 and any of the three as R4 as long as you don't use both CL and HCL.

Practically speaking, CL should at least match HCL, so I'd guess many end up with EL = L1 and CL = R4 per Merlion's prior reply above.

I’ll insert a screenshot of the page here as an image so it’s a handy ref:

As for the assumption that if CL is good, HCL will also be good, well in my case I scored A1 for CL (taken as the only major exam in Sec 3, no sweat), but in Sec 4 I scored B4 for HCL (partly becos I had other more important subjects to focus on).

Understand. What I meant was I don't think there would be a situation where:

              a) EL = L1, CL = R4

              is worse than

              b) HCL = L1, EL = R4 (if you can use EL here)

Hence, do what you did above; once you lock up CL = A1, try to get EL as high as you can (for many reasons) and then just pass HCL.

Just copying out the necessary info from here: https://www.moe.gov.sg/post-secondary/admissions/jae/admission-criteria

                Subjects in L1R5 (L1R5 = First Language + 5 Relevant Subjects):
L1 - English or Higher Mother Tongue Language (MTL)
                R1 - H
                R2 - M or S
                R3 - H, M or S
                R4 and R5 - Any 2 GCE O-Level subjects except Religious Knowledge

What cannot be used in the same aggregate computation:
                - Grades for both Higher MTL (such as Higher Chinese, Higher Malay and Higher Tamil) and MTL (such as Chinese, Malay and Tamil). For example, if Higher MTL is used as the first language, MTL cannot be used as a relevant subject.
                - “Merit” and “Pass” grades for the Mother Tongue ‘B’ Syllabus (Chinese ‘B’, Malay ‘B’ and Tamil ‘B’).

But I think everyone has already figured that out 😂

A short video on the differences between these two.

                  Hope this will help.

Commentary: I gave up JC to go to poly and never looked back

Every mid-April when polytechnic students begin the new academic year, CNA’s Grace Yeoh is reminded of the decision that altered her education path - and how going against the grain at a young age set her up for life.

https://www.testpapersfree.com/view.php?id=97424 is a difficult choice to make. While there are pros and cons in both, it is generally a personal preference. If you are a hands-on person and skills oriented then poly is a good choice. On the other hand, if you are an academic person and would like to pursue university studies then JC is a good choice. Both if done with commitment can make you successful. I personally would choose JC though. 😄

If by the time reach aged 16,
                        after your O level,

                        eg. Journalist
                        in this case, or Pilot,

                        then Yes,
