Potlucks
-
Can everyone share what you usually take to a Potluck? I just got invited to one and am cracking my head on what to do.
Prefer easy to prepare, easy to transport and popular dishes that people will grab.
A definite no-no is ready-made hokkien popiah coz the popiah went so soggy that no one dared to touch them...
Making a list here: (will update as it goes)
1. Brownie
2. Ice Cream
3. Sushi
4. Pasta
5. Kebabs
6. Laksa (using premix)
7. Chips with dips
8. Alfredo lasagna
9. Fried udon, fried bee hoon, fried tung hoon
10. Fried rice, nasi lemak rice
11. Otah and satay -
what’s your signature dish?
for me, since i do not cook, I would bring ice-cream. -
My signature dishes are too time consuming (kong bak pow, vinegar trotters etc) and unsuitable for the outdoor potluck cum BBQ we are having. Was thinking of baking a chocolate brownie…
-
For me, it's usually sushi!
Bought, not home-made!
Cos I am a lousy cook! -
1. bake a brownie with lotsa of walnuts (no raisins pls) and bring along hershey choc fudge. pour on top of brownie. put it in your host’s microwave for 20 secs (or more). the fudge will melt all over the top. and it makes a very impressive dessert
2. fry ‘curly’ tri-color pasta (fusili) - orange.green.yellow with onion, carrots and spinach (or any thing green). VIOLA! bring a little sauce along. can use chicken cube (if u don’t know how to season the dish) . keep some of this stock. put over your pasta just at your host’s place, put in microwave, heat up till hot , stir to make sure your pasta is not too dry! VIOLA! beautiful colours n impressive!
3. Chicken/salmon kebab
use 3/4 length satay stick. can buy. don’t waste time cutting.
- cut fresh (skinned, boneless) drumsticks in cubes. string onto sticks with RED capsicum, Orange capsicum and onion. Season chicken before string for 1 hour. - salt, pepper, soya sauce, sesame oil. if run out of idea, buy 1 pack of CHICKEN RICE seasoning from HOME gourmet or prima. $1.30. use tt to season! VIOLA! everyone would praise u.
opps! forgot, u have to grill/roast tt before bringing (about 35 mins). if no oven, saute the chicken n veg separately then string them for the kebab effect. easy to eat and very yummy!
nb: i love saffron. so i use saffron and minced onion n garlic for seasoning. tt will take at least 2 hours of marinating ahead.
- salmon
salt is a little - tt’s all. then string with capsicum. try not to use all 3 colours of capsicum. personally i feel tt does not look very nice. red and orange lok gd. -
Laksa! Gravy cooked using premix from prima n put in thermal pot for easy transport n keeping it warm throughout. Separately pack the other ingredients such as noodles, fishcakes, bean sprouts, Tau pok, hardboiled eggs etc as u wish.
It’s a quick n easy n won’t fail dish because using premix -
Potato chips w special tuna n Mayo dip. Add a bit of lemon juice for a little zest. Sure hit with kids. Add in vegetable sticks for the more health conscious who do not eat chips. Cheers!
