Real reason behind Singapore’s obsession with tuition
-
I beg to differ please.
Pay increment and promotion is not fast at all, especially if you are NOT a scholar or good honors holder.
Even the starting pay for pass, merit and honors degree holders differ.
The teaching profession is fraught with the similar if not same politics as you would expect from the private sector. It may be even worse.
So if you are surrounded with superiors with no integrity, then it’s pretty easy to work your way up. You just need to press the right buttons.
I reckon that’s one of the reasons WHY the passionate ones get disillusioned fast and abandon ship. Precisely because their efforts are, most of the time, not recognized at all. -

According to recruitment firms.. some figures..I beg to differ please.
Pay increment and promotion is not fast at all, especially if you are NOT a scholar or good honors holder.
Engineer, honors degree, starting pay, $2400 ~ $2800.
average Increment 2~4%
compare to teachers.. teachers' increment and promotion not fast..?
And now PMETs suffering fierce competitions and wage suppression from cheaper FTs..
At least for civil service, males get a little extra after serving NS.. private companies.. no way!
Take a walk around the manufacturing, engineering jobs.. and look at the harsh realities outside..
But then, those looking for fast bucks should consider financial sector rather then teaching.. for those looking at down-to-earth jobs.. teaching is much more financially rewarding than engineering. -

if NIE trained teachers or current school teacher can command $100/hr, who still got heart to teach in schools?Sim TT:
Only those really passionate and those who cannot make it outside will stay on. Overall standard of teachers dropping.
Something has gone wrong, if teachers allowed to moonlight.

not surprising if standard of teachings dropping at schools..
in many industries, employees are not allowed to work for competitors after a certain period after resignation.. MOE not only doesn't have that, but they even allow teachers to moonlight! -

How to judge that the std of teachers have dropped?
when the percentage of students having tuition increases.. (not 100% on teachers only, but relative mis-match between tested and taught.. MOE share part of the liability as they set the papers)
when you see more news of hidden cameras is school toilets.. -
I don’t view tuition/enrichment centres as competitors to MOE. Parents send their kids to tuition centre for a variety of reasons. Some parents have a choice.
-
it’s like saying food court is not competitor to hawker centers…
-
And the cook who learnt all his skills at the hawker stall has no conflict of interest to the hawker center when he moonlight or jump ship to the food court…?
-
If I view tuition centres/ enrichment centres as competitors to MOE, and felt the centres are doing a better job, I would have withdrawn my kids from MOE, state homeschool as reason, and just send them to study at such centre. But I’m not doing that.
-
you have a choice between hawker centre or food court or restaurant
you have no choice for primary school in s’pore, parents not sending their kids to school will be jailed, by law. not everyone will be approved for home schooling… -

part of the schooling process is learning to be a social being and how to relate with others / peers / authorities (teachers), doing and compete in group activities and sports - this is difficult to replicate in home school
