How to save electricity?

limlim:
True. but I guess for SG weather no need storage type.GLORYmum:
I think instant heater is alot more energy saving than water tank heater but the water using instant heater seems not as hot as the tank type, do u feel the same too?
For instant heater, the water is flowing continuously, there is a limit how much \"heating\" the water is subjected to before they flow out of the heater. It is not practical to have a XXXXL heater inside a heater..
But for storage heater, it's different. The water are stored inside. As long as heat is supplied, the temperature will continue to raise. So it is possible to heat the water by 10, 20, or even 30, 40°C.
That is why, instant heater is never practical in winter countries. The incoming water at 5°C, add 10°C to it, still only 15°C, not warm enough.
Oh, still need to go with storage heater for hotter water. -
Why you need your water so hot? Singapore already so hot…

To cut down on gas usage, does the type of cookware matter? as well as the stove condition?
MIL stove burner is not ok, some of the caps are chipped and I notice the flames are not even. She does not know that the flame should sit under the pot. Many of her pots hv burnt marks at the sides.
I use piped gas, most of my cookware are WMF s/s and I use residual heat to cook through the food. -

Wow! Flower and cherrygal that's amazing! Do u cook lunch also and weekends? How come mine last only 27days. Do u gals always cook soup? My maid cook soup 1 hour everyday. Actually I think city gas is cheap.
Yes I cook on weekends too. I usually cook my soup for 2-3 hrs on stove. And I cook breakfast & lunch too but not everyday. My gas is thru pipe not tank. -

I believed the type of cookware does matter. If you use pressure cooker or thermal pot can cut the usage by quite a lot especially for stew & soup.To cut down on gas usage, does the type of cookware matter? as well as the stove condition?

Probably no need to be so hot but I hv found the temp from instant heater not as consistent as storage tank, sometimes hot sometimes lukewarm n sometimes quite cold. -
Yes, cooking habits also matter. I like to use medium to low heat when boiling things, never let the fire touch the sides of the pots. The large flame is only used for quick stir-frying in my wok. After food preparation, I cook one dish after the other very quickly. I don’t let the empty wok sit on an open flame for too long.

When you just turn on the tap, the water will be cold. It takes a while until the temperature stabilise, say, 5~10sec.cherrygal:

It should stay almost constant but if there is fluctuation in flow rate (i.e., someone turns on the other taps or flush etc..), the temperature will fluctuate accordingly.
Then, if you turn it off(water flow) for a while (soaping etc..), and turn it on, it will be \"hot\" for a while then stabilise. Because after you turn it off previously, the heater is still hot(even power already cut) and continue to heat the water in the heater chamber for a while.
using storage tank should provide more steady water temperature. -

hi,
I will be away for months and would like to switch off all appliances including the fridge. But i understand that the freezer may not work again.
anyone knows how to switch it off properly so that it would work again when i come back later?
TIA!! -

I have switched off fridge/freezer for months at a time and they worked fine when used again later. Maybe the problem others encountered could be that the escape of the coolant while the freezer is off? Topping up the coolant when you return (if the service centre can do that) should solve it. The main thing is to make sure the insides are completely dry and to leave the doors open while you are away to prevent mould from growing. Or maybe you can put some desiccant inside though I've not tried that before.hi,

if you are a frequent air con user, have it serviced every 3 months.
this way there is no need to blast it to get cool air and then maintain temperature at 25 degrees. -
This thread reminds me of limlim.
Where’s limlim? -

For those who need to shift fridge, just need to ensure that after switching off, the fridge should remain stationary for at least 6 or 12 hrs before \"moving\" it. -

why must i leave it stationary for 6-12 hrs? I just bought a new fridge...how to switch over to my new fridge huh?
How soon can I migrate my perishables to the new fridge? I need to clean the interiors of course, and cool down the fridge for how long before placing my contents inside?
That means, before the delivery men arrive, I need to transfer my perishables to the cooler box for 6-12 hrs?? oh gosh....i need to buy that cooler box tonight. -
Re switching off fridge - please plan accordingly and don't switch it off in a hurry... A neighbor once switched off their fridge just before they left for the airport (to stay abroad for 2 months)... after a few days, a stench started coming out... and it was worse and worse...
Low and behold, the neighbor was an elderly couple in their late 70s whom was \"last seen over a week ago\" and then we have a stench of XXXXX... so, being good neighbors, we called the police and they came, then more cars came and then the SDF came... the door was opened and then, they found.... TWO LARGE PIECES OF ROTTING STEAK IN THE FREEZER... :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: -

LOL wouldn't it be cheaper to just leave the fridge running for 2 months?Re switching off fridge - please plan accordingly and don't switch it off in a hurry... That is if you still want to use the \"old\" fridge lah.. eg. renovation, painting etc..

If you're replacing it then doesn't matter.. just switch it off and throw it away.
edit: Also, after putting the fridge in place, better to let it stand for few hrs (some say 24hrs) before switching it on. This is to allow any fluid to flow back into its compressor, and to prevent any damage to the appliance.
As for the cooler box.. maybe lor.. bcoz the deliveryman who deliver the new fridge would have advised you to let it stand for a few hours before switching it on..
