actually there is no difference between CL and HCL up to pri 3 level

Is that true??? I heard the difference is not significant from textbook perspective.

But I think there are still some difference. Eg. SAP school might pegged the question difficulty to different levels. Eg. in my kids' school, bi soon is tested during exams. it's not the total number of bi hua but rather for a particular stroke, which no. should that be. This I feel is alot more challenging. My kid did a neighbourhood school CL paper and she is able to score 90+ but when it comes to SAP school CL paper, this is more obviously challenging for her.

Also within SAP school, the level of CL they are exposed to is different with the class banding. Eg. for those weak in CL, there are less words to learn during tingxie. Meanwhile for those in stronger classes, the words are more, difficult as well as they need to memorise, etc.... so the CL exposure is different.

as you have explained, the subject banding will take care of the weaker ones

      so why worry ?

I think HCL is just a small component in a SAP school. the main chunk of a SAP school is its chinese culture expressed in various forms like 弟子规, chinese festival celebrations, chinese calligraphy etc, and the inculcating of traditional values like respect of seniors, community before self, group contribution, gratitude, repay to society etc

seriously, for CL / HCL, there isn’t much memorising, if the child has the right understanding of the words and the right attitude towards it. and right attitude start from parents

if before anything the parents are already saying how difficult HCL is, how so much "memorising" to do, it will frighten the daylight out of the kids and the kids will just take the easy way out and sing along with the parents …ya, HCL is very difficult…

my family speaks English, but we NEVER say HCL is tough or difficult. from young they are curious about chinese words and they just grow with it. honestly (God forbid that I should be proud about it) I have not seen my kids memorise any tingxie or whatever…all they did was pay attention in class. I didn’t even know when / how often they have the tingxie…or how they scored. The results are ok.

ask yourself : does you child need to memorise those English sayings and figure of speech ? Yes ? If they can do for English, they can do for Chinese. Attitude.

          Hi verykiasu2010,

I find it very hard to make it easy for him to understand..do you have any place to recommend that can help kids like that.

          depends where do you stay

can try Modular at Bukit Timah Plaza or Novel at Balmoral or Global Math at Goldhill

          Hi verykiasu2010,

Thanks for all the suggestions, will go check them out!

            Hi Brenda10,

Thanks for your understanding, it is scary when I see primary 2 maths getting more difficult for him..how to help..I know it is easy for those who are good but those who are borderline..it also seems like a lot of the good tuition places focus on good students, are there those that can really help the weak ones? Was your child all along good?

            Hi BigDad

Yes. I also very scare of maths especially those fraction and ratio. DD maths for CA1 and SA1 was still ok but I yet to see the CA2 that tested today. Don't know why the maths is so tough nowadays. 😞

Ya Brenda10, its getting tougher, I think I need to get outside help already!

                Hi verykiasu2010,

I thought that chinese was all about memorization, because if they cannot recognise the word, they cannot try to make out what it is, not like English where it is easier to guess the meaning. How do your kids do it? Can share? TIA 😄

you got to start from nursery / K1 to expose the kids to chinese lang at the same time as english lang. chinese lang is not an after thought.

there are quite a number of VCDs on teaching basic chinese characters, how the words are formed...once the kids get to see that it is so interesting, it won't bore them to learn more, no effort needed, and they will remember all the basic stuff and when they go on to more complicated words, they would have already known the words in parts and how to forget ? for eg, the word for surname \"Lim\" is double wood......you need more wood to form a forest, 2 woods and 3 woods form a forest, for the chinese words....森林

                    one man is big : 一 +人= 大

                    two man for the sky : 二 + 人 = 天

                    small on big is sharp : 小 + 大 = 尖

                    etc etc etc

I am new here, am very impressed with your way of helping your children. Chinese is always a big headache for my children and I. For words that are more difficult, how do we use this method. Can I know what these Chinese VCDs are, what their titles are and where to purchase them? Thank you.

[/quote]those are VCDs for children's learning of basic (Han) chinese words...colourful cartoon presentation with children voices - sure to attract children's attention ...... unfortunately I got them many years ago and they have been thrown away when I last moved house...they don't need that anymore. if i see them again in Popular, I will post it at the Chinese language thread

i just left the kids watch those VCDs while i do my work.....
