Im looking for a p1 math tuition centre urgently, any recommendation? Peferably around parkway or east/north east. Her math teacher has informed us that her math is below the average in class and require extra attention to build up/strengthen her foundation so that she can catch up with the class.

In selecting an enrichment centre for you P1, who needs to build her foundation, please consider:

1. the curriculum of the centre - The more established centres have a systematic curriculum and the teachers are expected to follow this predetermined curriculum. The curriculum of most of these centres are ahead of the rate at which the school teaches.

2. group size of the class - Depending on timing, some classes can have as few as two kids while others can be a roomful of upward from 10. Group size is an important factor to consider depending on whether your child will voluntarily seek clarification in the case that she does not follow.

3. her level of interest in math - If there is lack of interest in the subject, and her results are below average, it is likely to be a downward spiral from this point. If there is a lack of interest, you may want to consider enrolling her for a programme with some structured play element :rahrah: . Once her interest is ignited, it makes learning a lot easier and enjoyable.

My girl was in Mind Stretcher for a year in P1 / P2, before we withdrew after not seeing improvement :gloomy: . Mind Stretcher is a group class, with a set curriculum for the teachers to follow. Our experience with Mind Stretcher was:

1. homework - She was expected to complete worksheets after worksheets. Whilst there is a common belief that math requires a lot of practise, I am not a subscriber of drilling exercises. We found that the worksheets were adding to her load of homework from school.

2. teaching methods - Upon submission of the worksheets in the following lesson, the teacher would go through the answes on the board. As the child frantically copies the answers, the child has little bandwidth to understand and appreciate the explanations for the answers. This is especially the case where my child (a) needs more time to digest information and (b) too shy to request the teacher to slow down (which is common among our local students). When she comes back with the answers copied, I need to walk through the solution and explain to her all over again as she did not have the chance to understand the explanation at all :scratchhead: . Now you guess who is the tutor who was paid :moneyflies: but not teaching? and the tutor who was teaching but not paid :imanangel: ?

3. sturctured curriculum - As Mind Stretcher has been in the business for many years, you can be assured that the curriculum is structured and modelled after the MOE syllabus. They even have programme targetting at GEP preparation.

Important questions to ask before sending your child to a tuition centre:

1) Can your child focus in a group of 10 or more pupils?
2) Does your child ask questions when he does not understand in class?
3) Is your child weak in Math or is able to take challenging questions?
4) Have you understood the curriculum that the centre is offering?
5) Is the curriculum suitable for your child's learning needs? Too challenging?
6) Is the method used by the centre easy for your child to absorb and understand and to apply in school?

My boy is having tuition at Neuromaths. They have an outlet at Parkway. I happened to get a voucher for 2 lessons up for exchange to any supermarket vouchers so that i can use them to buy formula for my younger boys. I'm surprised to hear that mindstretcher have homework...as my kid have been with them and there is no homework at all. Generally, we'r happy with the progress..

Did you try \"Math Monkey\"? My child is K1, she is enjoying her class every week. Is FUN, activity-filled and ability based curriculum. She is very motivated to attend class every week. Now able to handle 2 digit addition already .

i was impressed by result…she can do add and subtract using fingers
for double digit very fast
for hundereds a bit low to get answer
maybe she below 5 nia

My boy is in pri 4 this year. Used to have a 1 to 1 sch teacher tutor ($50/hr) but he failed terribly. However, this year we enrolled him to Just Education and he managed to score 80+ in SA1 & full marks in CA2. The math tutor, Mrs Chai managed to get his attention and the tuition fees are reasonable at only $120/mth for 2 hours per session.
