Hi chamonix,
Hi Hellokitty2,Hellokitty2:
Hi chamonix,
Can I ask if your child is at TAS, or did your child used to be taught by the TAS ex teacher in school? How did she recommend the materials to you? So good..I also want, so far, I only met the administrator. Did you make an appointment?
I would have enrolled my kids with TAS if I had got to know about the centre earlier. Unfortunately, we were in the midst of preparing for our overseas stint when we met up with TAS. Even then, we went there with the intention of buying books only. One thing just led to another.
Actually, TAS has shared a lot in their posts under the Langauge, Speech and Drama Section. Some of the resources they recommended me, such as Improve Your English by Usborne, can also be found there.
Oh I see, thanks so much for sharing with me..I do notice that their posts are very good, they seem to have a lot of knowledge and they share very generously. I will go and check out more. Where are you based now? -
chamonix:
Hi chamonix,
These are some books I find useful in gaining an insight to the model methods -
The Singapore Model Method for Learning Mathematics by MOE
Conquer Problem Sums by onSponge (P3 - P6)
Challenging Maths Problems Made Easy by Ammiel Wan
Teaching Fraction, Ratio and Percentage Effectively
Model Diagrams by Maths456.com
You are based overseas too? How do you get all these resources? Did you get them before you left Singapore?
Would appreciate it much if you could help.

Thank you! I actually realized that I have that book sitting on my shelf for the longest time, blew the dust off it when I read your post. It is actually quite good
Hi,
My DD and I find Fan-Math i-Excel (Heuristic and Model Approach) useful. It's a series of books for P1-P6. It covers some common heuristic (non-routine) questions and models. The P1 book even provides stickers for beginners to better visualise the models.
Fan-Math also has a set of assessment book cum CD-Rom (Model as a tool) for P2 aqnd P3. It's an interactive lesson that kids and adults would enjoy. Maybe you can go to their website and try their demo. Cost is $88 (promo price) for 12 month subsription. Works out to be about $7.33 per month... However, it's coming to year end so I don't know if they can pro-rate.
The website is http://www.fan-learning.com.sg

How good do you find it, is it useful for a clueless mom like me who can only use algebra?ksi:
Alternatively, there is those hometutor DVD on Math which they explain pretty clearly. You can either stand there in Popular bookstore to understand the model diagram method or buy a copy to learn. But I am not sure how much it cost though.

I had bought it few years ago. It cost about $150 for 3 volume. Title is call:
Creative Mathematics
Heuristic Approach to Problem-Solving (Elementary) 2nd Edition.
Recommended for Primary 1 - 4. -

This set of multi-video lesson comes with:
Act it Out
Use a Picture/Diagram/Model
Make a Systematic List
Look For a Pattern
Work Backwards
Use Guess and Check
There are examples associated with the above methods as well as questions for practicing.
We seldom use it perhaps due to DD maths during P1 - P3 have no much problem.
Basically, I think the explanation and the illustration are good. More important is that you must have the patient and discipline when adapt to this type of method.
Hope the above useful to you. -
