          I do consider P1 maths is just 1+1 ... up to sum to 100... it's seems that I'm totally wrong, really feel stress now :shock:

            Now they do 1+1 in kindergarten, P1 more complicated :roll:

              yup, I am a mummy into puzzles and maths IQ questions, so I expose my P1 boy to such questions very often. Some references some of you may want to take a look:

              1) series of Olympiad Maths
              2) Just Education clinic and Distinction Maths assessments - they have million dollar questions
              3) Fan Maths assessments - Heuristics and Speed maths too

              just 2 cents worth

                Hi,

                May I know if P1 teaches maths using equations like this?

                34
                + 11
                -----------

                or using number bonds (reorganising method)?

                  That's why there are P1 preparatory classes. I think kids must at least know addition, subtraction, multiplication, division very well before entering primary school. Many kids already memorized the multiplication table by 4 or 5 years old ! It is important to start early.

                  The child must of course know how to read very well by K2.

                    If I recall, P1 kids have to know how to add and subtract up to 100 by the end of the year, along with single digit multiplication and division.

                      Hi Winth,

                      It depends on what the teacher has covered in school. Ultimately, the kids should be able to add 34+11 by the end of the school year. Before that, number bonds and place values play a more important part. Taking your question as an example, the kid would have to learn that this can be expressed as 3 tens 4 ones + 1 ten 1 one = 4 tens 5 ones

                      For number bonds, 8 +9 = 8+2+7 = 10 +7 = 17

                      For a better understanding of what's expected in P1, try to look out for The Essential Parents' Guide to Primary 1 Maths.

                        Hi,

                        One more question on timetable... :?

                        From school's cirriculum, usually when you learn 2 times table.
                        Is it this way:
                        1x2 = 2
                        2x2 = 4
                        3x2 = 6
                        4x2 = 8

                        OR

                        2x1 = 2
                        2x2 = 4
                        2x3 = 6
                        2x4 = 8

                        If I could remember from my primary school, it's the 1st method. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

                        The kumon series of multiplication is going for the 2nd method of teaching, and it's going to confuse my boy if I teach him the wrong method.

                        Pls advise.
