P2 Math - General Discussion

chamonix:
Ah, that's exactly how my son's kindergarten is teaching math concepts. The kids have tons of fun while learning to count by fives, ten, nines etc.
I'm rather intrigued by the way US preschools teach Math. I know of a friend whose son is attending the US preschool. The way they teach Math is different. For instance, her 4+ years old was learning 100 by grouping in tens, twenties etc. Think he was also learning addition and subtraction by regrouping too. It's really a good way for kids to explore Math.
Wow chamonix, your ds is really very good with numbers.
I hope my kids will adapt as well as yours when we return. Will bear in mind your tip about showing math workings, thanks! -
CKS, very minimal mental sum given to the students in ds school. They covered at the end of the year. Unlike dd school, I seen it’s like a weekly exercise during her P1 & started beginning of the school term.

Jedamum, ChiefKiasu,
Thanks for your explanation. P1 maths now is really very different from what I did when I was in P1 ! -

I do consider P1 maths is just 1+1 ... up to sum to 100... it's seems that I'm totally wrong, really feel stress now

Now they do 1+1 in kindergarten, P1 more complicated  -

yup, I am a mummy into puzzles and maths IQ questions, so I expose my P1 boy to such questions very often. Some references some of you may want to take a look:ctct61t:

1) series of Olympiad Maths
2) Just Education clinic and Distinction Maths assessments - they have million dollar questions
3) Fan Maths assessments - Heuristics and Speed maths too
just 2 cents worth -

That's why there are P1 preparatory classes. I think kids must at least know addition, subtraction, multiplication, division very well before entering primary school. Many kids already memorized the multiplication table by 4 or 5 years old ! It is important to start early.
The child must of course know how to read very well by K2. -

If I recall, P1 kids have to know how to add and subtract up to 100 by the end of the year, along with single digit multiplication and division.Hi,
