      Callie Tan:
i realized many math questions are simply testing the IQ of the kids.... but it's good to expose them to such questions....

Maths today not only tests the kids on their understanding as well as English.

not only IQ the language ability as well.

Totally agree....Language skills are crucial in Section C - Problem sums. Some kids don't do well in maths, not because they can't do maths but because they have problems understanding the questiion.

yeh, I did visible thinking with my dd page 8,9,10(p2) Page 8 is ok, but 9 n 10 all wrong. cause confution. now I am teaching her mathematical terms like stands for, represented as,expressed as...

I baught a single line book and make her do my own Qs. to practice.[/quote]Hi plum-cake,

Dunno if this will help but I always tell DD to see the digits in different place values (like hundreds, tens and ones) and add them together to counter check her answer.

For example, Visible Thinking book, pg 9, Q2d:
        309 can be represented as:
        _____3___ hundreds___0____ tens____9_ones
        To double check: 300+0+9=309

        OR____30____tens______9____ones
To double check: 30 tens is 300, 9 ones is 9 so 300+9=309

In all 3 digit numbers, the first 2 digit together makes up the tens.
        For example, in 876, there are 87 tens, 6 ones. Rational is 8 hundreds= 80 tens. Plus 7 tens= 87 tens.

        Hope I haven't confuse you..

          Tinkerbelle, :salute:

Thankyou for the Idea of double checking. I am going to teach her to do that. she never check her answers or look back. always do the questions in a hurry.

sorry only this one confused me
          Rational is 8 hundreds= 80 tens. Plus 7 tens= 87 tens.

          I teached her to divide.
for ex. 876 = _____tens _____ones.
then, for 10s she had to divide 876 by 10 then the ans will be 87 tens and then the remainder will go to ones i.e. 6.

            hi,
you can try to help your girl visually.
draw columns of TH, H, T, O (Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones)
            eg
            4215
            TH H T O
            4 2 1 5

how many hundreds in 4215, you just need to cover the TH and then read the numbers until the H column. ie 42Hundreds.
how many tens in 4215, cover the TH and H and then read the numbers until the T column ie 421Tens.

            just sharing.

              Hi, Thank you for sharing,

              It depends on the questions.

              Ex: 430 = _______tens ______ones.

              My dd's answer is

              430 = 3 tens 0 ones

But the answer is 43 tens 0 ones

you can represent a number in many ways. so the workbooks nowadays, are asking Qs to test kids in different angles and make them think and answer. my kiddo is very poor in thinking... she just pop the ans. try to finish earlier.... :stupid:

                Hi plum-cake,
Sorry ....See if I can explain myself better.

Eg: 345 = 3 hundreds, 4 tens, 5 ones. This type of question is easy for the kids to identidy with hence many kids tend to follow this pattern when answering other types of question like 345 = _____tens ____ones. Many kids will just see 4 tens and 5 ones as the answer, and not look at the 3 hundreds. The 3 hundreds must be represented as well. As there is no hundreds in the question, the hundreds will be regrouped into tens instead. 1 hundred=10 tens thus 3 hundreds will be 30 tens. There are already 4 tens in the tens place value so you add the 30 tens to the 4 tens and you'll get 34 tens.

Thus, to make things simpler for my DD, I explain to her that in all 3 digit numbers, the first 2 numbers will be the tens after regrouping.

Eg: In 345, the first 2 digits are the tens and the last digit is the ones. so answer is 34 tens, 5 ones. Hope that's clearer.

Thank you for your great Idea.

I really messed up everything. I started teaching Bar modelling cause Her school has started teaching them. At the same time thot of doing some rivision, and make her do the 1st chapter...... now I am stuck because I found that she is not very clear in her 1st chapter. now going back to basics to encourage her to learn place value 😢

                    Hi Mummies,

I happened to walk into Popular IMM this morning.
There is a member sale for some books…Visible Thinking in Maths is one of them. P5-P6 just arrived yesterday.
Price of books range from $6.50 to $8.20 (P1-6) according to the poster…at the cashier, the price of the P6 is $9.90 after discount…which is quite far off from the price mentioned. I will take it that $8.20 is the price for P6 level but the supervisor insisted that Popular cannot commit to the price mentioned…to me, I find that companies should honour the price printed esp such a large company like Popular :x

                      Hi Janet

I saw the printed price of P6 is $12.75 and P5A is $10.25 before discount. Just curious to know is this member sales is for all popular or only at Popular IMM ?

Member sales should apply to Popular islandwide. Sale just started.
                        For P6, it's just 1 book...P1-5 has both A and B.
