My P5 nephew learns the materialistic values from both his well known elite school & home. He told his dad to get a bigger new car & move to a bigger new house. Unfortunately, his dad is not rich enough to afford them. He wanted iPhone 5 & most of his friends have iPhone 5. His dad wanted his son to mix with the rich & GEP. The boy becomes very materialistic & keep requesting for things from his parents. Good values have to start from home.

Kids compare. It’s natural. This is when we have to step in and explain that they cannot ask parents for whatever their classmates own…my daughter asked for a party at a country club, a holiday to Hong Kong etc etc.

She is in a convent school. With both parents working, they can afford to give their kids material stuff.

Hubby & I have to explain and remind them frequently:
        1) what others have, do not expect to have the same…kids in 3rd world countries don’t even have food or clothes to wear.

        2) do not compare their results with those who are weaker.

          Hi Parents,

I’m also interested to know if students from convent school are more brand conscious ?
How about SCGS and Nanyang ?

this is very unbecoming... if no immediate stop or remedy, next time will lagi become worse...

u cannot compare like that because every sch will have their own share of brand conscious pupils... who may hv very busy parents who overlooked this value to them...

My daughter is studying in my alma mater…a convent school. I told her if there is anything she wants to be proud of, it should be her uniform. Do not compare…bcos we do not have means for her to do so…daddy doesn’t grow money on trees, mummy is a housewife, we cannot afford to stay in a condo like some of her classmates nor take holidays. But once in a while, we can go for meals in a restaurant or a movie.

It is not just in convent schools. Most kids study in independent schools are from well to do families. Their parents are able to afford branded stuffs. Most kids will tend to compare with their friends. Not all kids understand that every child comes from different family background. Sometime is due to peer pressure.

yes...it's tough for kids not to be able to understand every child comes from diff background...harder to explain to younger kids but still have to explain and teach...there is no end to comparison. even my maids used to complain their friends no need to wash car, why must they? :slapshead:
