On the contrary, not entirely pros.To prepare a child for GEP has its pros and cons. Uncle trap has mentioned on the pros, there are also cons to it. IMO, it is a double-edged sword. If a child is not 'gifted' enough, going through the preparation may build a mentality (for both the parents and the child) that the child is expected to get into the program. Not getting into the program will ended with some degrees of disappointment. If a less gifted child is admitted into the program as he/she is intensively trained to handle the tests, the child may also suffer in the program. It is quite a dilemma, right? To make such a decision.
My hubby is one who does not believe in the program. Not so much on its selection, but its nurturing programs on the giftedness of the kids. Hence, he thinks that being in the program or not is not a big deal.
In an ideal scenario, (like 30 years ago) no one prep for GEP. Kids go for the test and get selected. All go in on equal footing, so teacher will teach the whole class because all do not know the topic.
Fast forward, now parents prep for it. The system cannot fully captured who is gifted and who is diligently preparing. So some gifted children went in because they are gifted, but most (gifted and non-gifted) are \"prep\" so well that teacher \"assume\" all knows it and move the pace of teaching even faster. The not \"prep gifted\" child lacks behind not because they are do not know it but because they are not exposed to it. Their self-esteem fell, confidence fell. It is no longer a fair ground ,just like the moving \"Bell curve\" mentioned in another thread.
So what I am saying is that currently if children are gifted but not exposed, prep, etc then even if they got into GEP, they will have a steep learning curve due to the lack of exposure in various topics.
On the other hand, if \"high achievers\" which are not gifted but are prep and trained get into GEP, they will also sturggle thru GEP as pace of learning gets faster and the complexity of the topics gets harder.
So do I sound contradictory - No.
Prep your child to know your child.
No one will know if our child is normal, high achiever or gifted knowledgably or academically unless we test it out. One way is to teach advance and see how the child cope with syllabus for higher level.
If your child is able to understand concepts 1 level ahead keep going, but if they have difficulty in the current year syllabus then it is NOT advisable to teach ahead.
It is difficult to \"force\" advance learning, because it is either they understand or they do not understand. So as a benchmark (I anyhow set one because i also do not know), if the child can understand concepts 1 year ahead, then maybe parents should prep their child for GEP. Ultimately, if they failed to get into GEP, it is not the end of the world but if they got in, at least they do not have to struggle thru the program badly.
The important key is that parents must manage their expectations as well as the child's, since the chance of getting into GEP is very very low. I know I sound :siao: but no harm trying right? -
