      Hi sembgal,

Tks for the feedback. I'm contemplating between Rosyth and Holy Innocent. I prefer the latter as it's in between my house and my IL's - just 10 mins drive from home and 5 mins drive from my IL's. I have a younger one in pre school still and her school is opp my IL's place. So makes sense logistically to send my #1 to Holy Innocent. However, I know my chances are higher in Rosyth since daddy is alumni. How early does your friend's child take the school bus? I'm also worried my #1 will not have enough sleep.

You also mentioned your friend's child improved grades after tuition. You mean Rosyth doesn't do much teaching and relies on parents to send their kids for tuition for grades to be gd?
      Hi!

Not true that must go tuition to hv good grades. My girl with no tuition breezed thru her 3 years n still managed to get 90's for all her subjs. Plus I dun coach or give her a lot of work at home too.. Basically she only nd to pay attention in class n do sch hw.
      Cheers!

Hi, the one staying Sengkang has to board the bus at 6 something, couldn't remember the exact timing, and the other one who had tuition is not the bright type. There are 2 types of children in Rosyth, very smart and not so smart. The not so smart one will have to rely on tuition to keep up with the smart ones. When parents go all out to register their children in Roysth, they don't take into consideration if their children are smart or not. Why? Because all parents think their own children are smart. Then when the children can get in successfully, they will find their own ways, be it private tuition or enrichment centres to get their children to buck up.

Even the top student of Rosyth who top the whole cohort in PSLE a few years back, also goes for tuition in enrichment centres.

Any amount of extra homework given at home, even when the child does not receive any form of tuition or coaching, the practice that comes with doing the extra homework will help the child's grades improve.

          chl72,

tks for the feedback. is it true that rosyth does not over burden students with hw in the lower pri years? was your girl an average student or high performer in K2? last year, his teacher says he’s smart and ahead of his peers, but i find his spelling atrocious and he gets easily distracted in class. so i find it hard to tell if he’s above average, average or below average.

          sembgal,

is 6 something the norm? if it is, then i guess not much diff whether i send him to rosyth or HIPS, since he still needs to wake up at 5 plus anyway to eat and change, if we go the sch bus route.

            Hi krex,

Yes, not much hw. Most work done in class. Even if there is hw, it will be 1 or 2 ws only…
Frankly speaking, my girl can’t even speak a word when she was in nursery. She dun even understand a single English word that time. Luckily she catch up n I consider her slightly above avg when she was in k2 n she was selected to be the mc of their graduation concert. Her kindergarten tchrs did a great job n I am really thankful for having them teach my girl.
Boys being boys mostly are the same. Easily distracted, careless in written work etc… especially those smarter ones are even more so, I find. Dun hv to worry too much. Let him njoy sch n cultivate positive learning attitude.

            Cheers!

              chl72,

tks for the feedback! when rosyth streams from p3 onwards, i understand there are 2 top classes? how about the rest? are the remaining classes divided equally or ranked 3rd, 4th, etc. until there is a last class? what’s rosyth’s approach to weaker students? do they focus on the bright ones and leave the weak ones behind or insist that parents put them in extra tuition classes?

Hi Krex, I was in a similar situation as you when I registered my dd in 2012. I had a choice between Rosyth and another popular school which is nearer to my home. In the end, I chose Rosyth.

I had some regrets initially as the school bus came over at 11:30am as the school regulated arrival time for school bus is 12 noon. So morning was a mad rush as I have younger kids too. That's why I'm praying for single session in 2015.

However, in P1, I noticed that not only did the students had minimal homework, Rosyth's papers were not as tough as those from the other 'branded' schools. 99% of the questions in the test papers was based on what was being taught in class. The mean average for all 3 subjects was between 85-90+ for their level. My dd enjoyed learning in school. Of course, things might be different at higher levels but at least she had a smooth transition from kindy to P1 without tuition.

My friend's son, who is my dd's age, is in HI. I saw his papers. The Math paper was much tougher than Rosyth's, much to my friend's surprise. Several of the questions were not being covered in the activity books. According to my friend, the P1 SA1 mean score for Math was 60+. Of course, this might be one-off case. But I think if you have a chance, you should try to get both schools' papers and do a comparison. This may help you to make an educated choice.

Fear not, if the worry is having too much homework at the lower primary level. In fact, I was worried when DS did not bring back much homework, even up to P3 stage. So I guess it is usually the parents who are the guilty ones which added stress and workload to the students.

                      pummanuel,

if rosyth is in AM session next yr, my son is going to have a bit of a struggle. even at k2, he has problems waking up and he takes sooo long to finish breakfast sigh. he’s been late for school so many times already just this month alone. do primary schools have penalty or detention class if students are late? if he goes HIPS, he gets to wake up a bit later since school starts later for AM session and next yr, they’re still in PM session. plus it’s a faster drive there also. honestly, i think the neighbourhood schs in punggol would suit him best as they start between 7.45 to 8am, just that logistically, he needs to go to his grandparents’ place which are nearer rosyth and HIPS before/ after sch. also, my younger one’s kindi is at my IL’s place. the key attraction to rosyth is less hw and high standards towards the end (PSLE). tough choice eh?

                        1) Is anyone able to advise if rosyth will be confirmed in single session next year 2015 for p1?
