Fat cello, wow, it is indeed a good headstart. Ur DS can take Higher Chinese easily in upper primary / sec. You are definitely not kiasu! If the child is ready and positive towards learning with all the conditions right, why not!

My DS is in sec1 now. He is good in chinese, esp HYPY. It is very important to be good in HYPY not just for P1, 1st half of the year, but it comes in very handy at the later studies stages too. My DS has to submit chinese assignments using word and powerpoint in his P5, P6 and now sec1. He types chinese using HYPY with ease.

K2 do P3 / P4 is really very, very advanced. But if your son can handle, it's ok. Take it as exposure to higher level material. You'd given him a good strong foundation, right from the early beginning. 🙂

No Chinese character except hypy. I did not even know what word is that. All the pages are in hypy for tingxie (here we also did not put tone on top of the hypy when we quote). I need to search for the Chinese character to write beside the hypy. It is very frustrating.
            hi zakashi,

after you obtain the tingxie listing from your child's Chinese tr / HOD,

            a)
1st: ask yr child to read aloud each word from listing (given).
test if child able to recognize the character first (without aid of any hypy)

            example (tingxie test 1)

            一\t\t\t五\t\t\t鱼\t\t\t雨

            我

            鸦\t\t\t蛙\t\t\t窝\t\t\t牙 \t

            袜

            b)
2nd: ask your child to fill in the hypy correct tone, beside each character.

            一\t\tyi\t

            五\t\twu

            鱼\t\tyu

            雨 \t\tyu

            我\t\two

            鸦\t\tya\t\t

            蛙\t\twa

            窝\t\two

            牙 \t\tya

            袜 \t\twa

            c)
3rd: ask your child to write out both the Chinese word, + hypy tone beside it( side by side).

When teaching the kids how to write the Chinese characters, do be sure to guide them the correct sequence of the strokes, bi hua. The school teachers are very sharp and picky on this. Is there any special way to tell if the strokes are correct? For me, I really can’t unless I observe when my DS is writing. Start the habit of good writing from young and once they are used to it, it comes very naturally. Think K2 is a good age to start learning HYPY. Now when I observed the 2-3 years old, most can’t even speak very clearly and it will do more harm than good to start HYPY. The 4 tones of HYPY may be too complex for too young kids. However for words recognition, we can start from young.

Hi, can I ask you if your child is a local or comes from China?
I do know of a family who came from China. I learnt that at 2 years old in China, the kiasu mothers will start teaching child to recognize words. Currently that girl is in Pri school now and her Chinese standard is comparable to a secondary one. I asked her mother and she told me her child learnt the words meant for primary students when her child was in kindergarten. The Chinese top school exam papers are too easy for the child. However, the child's English standard is not very good.

Hi, can I ask you if you are a Chinese school teacher?

I've a friend (local), used to be a retired Chinese school teacher from a reknown CHIJ SAP school. She taught her grand-child to recognize as many words as possible and cheng yu (idioms) using (DIY + purchased off the shelf) flash cards, since 2 years old. Currently that girl is P5 now, her Chinese essays / composition standard is comparable to a Secondary 4 student.
