[Bishan] Tutors/Tuition Centres/Enrichment
-
Hi,
I am not sure what’s best for my child going to P1 next year. I wish to have his school work reinfoced and homework done.
We live minutes away from Bishan’s Junction 8 Mall.
1. is a private tutor or sending to a centre better?
2. if it is a centre, what are the better centres for chinese - Han, Hua, Berries, Tien Hsia or? And other subjects?
3. is there a government body that gauges the performance of these centres? If there is, which is it?
Thank you. -
I guess it depends on your needs.
School has a syllabus, whereas private just do assement. But if your child needs the individual attention, then no choice.

They are all good- in their own ways i guess. Try out and see which one works better for you.

No. -

At preschool & P1, group learning will be more fun

Berries is pretty successful in their preschool/lower primary syllabus and they offer HCL mainly. However, they don't do tingxie and they assess only every half a year with a progress report. You can do trial class. Tien Hsia preschool is very nursery-rhyme based but they have ting xie sometimes and tests at end of each term with a progress report. When I went to Hua many years back, they lose out to tien hsia, berries becos they only use local teachers. But I heard they have changed now. I prefer China teacher not because their Chinese is good but because they cannot speak English to my child.

No. -
Thank you so much for your input.
1. I have a JC girl come in 2 - 3x a week to go through with him his school work.
2. Will be enrolling into Tien Hsia. Tried Jiang - 9 lessons, didn’t like the teachers or the management. The center is badly maintained too. -
Really Jiang is badly managed? tell us more.
But, They are really popular! -
Hi Angeline,
I did forum it … posted “Bully in Jiang”. Yes, I agree they are popular. It waS after hearing good things about them here at the forum that I decided to send my son there though I live in Bishan and have to get the nanny to taxi my child there.
Check out the posting.
Also visit the centre yourself, check out the classrooms, toilets and teachers. I believe it’s because of their popularity that has made their management take too much for granted. The teacher named Kim told me that my son can never get good cHINEse education anywhere else in Singapore and it would be to the detriment of my child if I pull my child out.
This is from my personal experience though - I guess it depends on who you get as a teacher. But when concerns are raised, the management shuns away and say it’s not their responsiblity and they are not liable … blah blah blah.
I really feel there should be a balance. All the best. -
George,
Have you considered Molin? Only thing is that they are located in the east.
My kids have been with Molin since preschool.
Typically for P1, they have hypy worksheet and spelling every wk. At the end of term 1, they are also doing chinese character tingxie now.
They also start with composition for the kids. It’s filled with students from SAP schools.
There is a separate thread under language for this. Sorry, I don’t how to post link. -
Hi MMM,
Yes I did. I follow this website and forum religiously, haha. Molin and Jiang were the 2 shortlisted centres. Molin is definitely way too far. Being a single parent, I have to hire a mature student to takeover from my nanny and taxi my son to the centre while the nanny stays home to look after my daughter. So Molin would definitely be risky if anything happens. I work at Stamford so Jiang was the choice.
Anyway, I have enrolled them now into Tien Hsia for Term II. It’s just 2 blocks away from where I stay in Bishan and based on the current ratings on this website, they seem pretty OK.
Thanks for your advise. -
