Hi there!
My dd is in Sec 2 IP heading for Sec 3 next year. She is likely going to qualify for Triple Sci (9 subj), but is thinking of doing Double Sci, Double Humanities instead (8 subj). Is it important to take Physics at Upper Sec? Will not taking Physics limit her future options a lot?
Thanks to all the experienced parents! -
If dont take Physics in Year (3 and 4), then next time cannot go for universities’ Engineering related courses, without A-level Physics background. Can’t recall if Chemical engineering is a rare exception, without A-level Physics.
But if your daughter totally not interested in any future Engineering related careers in the first case, then nothing to lose. Just stick to Double Pure Sciences, will do. Double Pure Sciences study work-load in itself, already very heavy & demanding.
Also by now, at end of IP 2, your daughter would also have some idea whether she herself like Physics, is she good in Physics or not, compared to Bio & Chem ? If she not keen in Physics or not good in Physics and not interested in Engineering related career, then forget about Physics. Study one subject less, helps a lot, allowing the student more time to study other subjects, end up doing better at end of IP 4 -

Double science / double humanities is the smarter option these days.

Triple science is more of a prestige option, a legacy leftover from the days when policemen wear shorts.
There are very few university courses that have Physics as a pre-requisite - only Physics major require Physics AFAIK. -
@kiasudad1
Personally, I would let my child go for the double science and double humanities too if that’s what she wants.
If she has come to the decision based on on her interest and strength and career options in future, I would tell her to just go ahead.
To me, its ok if u are down to 1 humanity (IH) for triple sciences or that fixed two sciences for JC if she thinks she has enough of the third science.
The important thing is that if she has made the choice, she should take responsibility for it and then do her best to make it work.
More often than not, when she do so, it will turn out fine in the end.
All the best to yr dd! -
Thanks lego, floppy and phttp for your kind advice
She really lazes around a lot... complains about both Physics and Chemistry. Guess I just worried that if she takes Double Science and her Chem cannot score B3 in Sec 4, she will only be able to take H2 Bio in J1. And this will mean she will not be able to take lots of courses in uni. -
For her Year 3 next year,
can she just take 1 Humanity subject instead of 2 ?
If can, and if she is stronger in her Science than in Humanities subjects (History / Geog / Lit), refer to her (last year Year 1 + her current Year 2 mid year ) exam results, then let her take Triple Pure Sciences.
Anyway, when your girl goto Hwa Chong in Year 5, she can always switch over to Econs. So, if her IP school can allow 1 Humanities, just do 1 Humanities, be it History / Geog / Lit -
Thanks… she do also need to consider the Triple Sci + 1 Humans option also. Her Sci and Humans are about same score, but I must say she has to put in a lot more work into Phy + Chem, altho she is more interested in them.

I assume she likes Bio the most and wants to take for sure? Otherwise, can take Physics and Chem to keep the most options open? I think in JC can take H2 Bio even if didn't take Bio in Sec 3 and Sec 4.

I generally prefer 2+2 but 3 of one is fine if student really loves the general sciences or arts and is trying to figure out what to do. -

My girl took triple sciences with single humanity because she really don’t want to take an additional humanity subject. She said she will “suffer” if she have to do so, lol.

I’m perfectly ok with her choice too.
Btw, it seems like HCJC’s latest info for 2022 JC1 students no longer states that u need to have a B3 in chemistry in sec 4 to be able to take it in JC.

That said, laying a good foundation in the subject will be good for her if she wants to continue to take it in JC. -

I thought they had min grade for H2 Math and Physics and a larger disclaimer for Bio that don't need to take in Sec 4 before? I may not be remembering correctly though (or I may not have been looking at the right thing at the time
). Unfortunately, I had only saved down the JC subject combi document before.
As long as the kid is interested and happy, any of these permutations are fine...
