For those considering Sec 2 subject combinations for your child..if you child has no preference,
then you may want to consider SS/Hist combination... why?
Because, both subject have very similar approach to answering GCE O level questions. unlike SS/GEOG.

You kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
      I have a different take:
I would recommend that the student take either Lit or Geog as they are more different from SS. Then the child will learn a wider range of skills and approaches to learning. This is useful for those who intend to focus more on sciences later as at least they will have broader grounding in humanities, and will also be useful (though not essential) for those who may eventually take Geog or Lit at A levels. This was my advice to my daughter when she was choosing her subjects at the end of Sec 2 - she chose Lit, and even though she didn't take Lit at A levels, she appreciated those 2 years of Lit.

The exception to this advice might be for the very weak students who are struggling to cope, in which case \"doubling up\" may ease the load slightly.

        Hi all

Ds just started Sec 1 this year. Last time in primary school used to print out the past year papers from different school for different subjects to practise. May I know how to get this kind of papers for secondary school? Is it sold in Popular?

          No.

Popular bookshop don’t sell any Secondary schools’ past year papers. Popular only sell " Ten-year-series " GCE ( O-level, N-level and A-level) National exam past year papers.

You can buy Secondary schools’ past year exam papers from those "push cart" located inside Lot 1 shopping mall (level 2, near the escalator) beside Choa Chu Kang mrt or
in Bras Basah complex (level 3), or
from any other shopping mall push-cart, that happen to sell them.

But for Lower Secondary (1 and 2),
all of them don’t sell any "bu-hua" (Standard Chinese) nor sell any "gao hua" (Higher Chinese) Secondary schools’ past-year-papers.

          Hence, for Lower Secondary Chinese,
to prepare for (mid-year exam or year-end exam), practise from those Assessment books, will do.
          E.g.
publishers like EPH, SAP, Marshall Cavendish, etc.

          Think this year (2021),
your Sec 1 MOE Chinese syllabus has changed. It is good to visit Popular bookstore, browse through the latest newly released "hot-from-the-oven" Chinese Assessment books, see which ones are suitable.

          But
          for Upper Secondary 4 level,
Yes, I saw Sec 4 Higher Chinese past year papers, sold at Bras Basah complex, ground floor (level 1).

          Alternately,
you may get your son to approach his own internal Secondary school library, find out whether they have past years’ assessment (exam) papers. If have, better still, can use his school’s library photostating machine, to zap a copy.

Depend on what is your school’s practice .
Some Secondary schools do allow their students to access their past years’ own school exam papers, while other schools are strict, exam papers are strictly "out of bound" for their own students, especially those highly popular Secondary schools that accept end-of-Sec2 students in for a Transfer into Sec 3, via taking subject entrance tests, at the end of Sec 2.

The school has a lot of past years papers for your child to do.
Unlike primary school, in Secondary school, each school has different level and depth to the topics, So it is more school specific until O level years.
So an exam paper from XYXY sec may not be suitable for your child in the school simply because they are testing different skill sets.

Also - beware - I have seen parents who buys from stall - the papers from XXX sec - then when I compared to the actual exam papers - they are DIFFERENT .

The approach to doing well in Sec school is a little different from Primary school.

For Lower Secondary (1 and 2), different schools teach different Science topics. Some schools prefer to teach Lower Sec Chemistry first, while other schools prefer to teach Physics first, later then followed by teaching either Bio or Chem.

Hence, when buying past year papers for Science, buy only those schools that tend to follow your son's school Science teaching topical sequence.

              The same, apply to Maths.
Some schools jump teaching certain Maths topics first, don't follow exactly the standardized MOE Lower Sec Maths syllabus, Term by Term.

Schools will usually give students past years' papers (from own school) to do and review before exams. Your DS can check with his subject teacher whether the school gives access for students to download/print the past years' papers (e.g., school library or student portal).

                All the best.

All of us that are teaching in the schools are just as anxious about our students grades as the parents are.
So we the teachers will also want to print past years test papers exam papers for them to do. And these are the 'internal' same school papers. Mainly because - the paper set - the standard is very similar. We know what level our students are capable of doing.

Come nearer to main exams - EOY or O levels.
We will print not just internal papers and O lv papers, but also prelim papers from other schools.

However, we will select the schools that the prelim paper is to be printed - for the students to attempt.
While we want to stretch them, we do not want to discourage them too.

Hence we will choose to print papers from those schools that set the exams similar to the school.

In other words - if we might not even print papers from the \"TOP\" schools (which the pasar malam will sell)

Hence - I would discourage you from buying these papers.

Instead ask the school teachers for papers.

PM me if you need more clarifications.

                  Cheers! 😄

                    Hi

Is AEP considered Higher Art for O levels?

If a school is not under AEP, but offers Higher Art to pupils as optional subject, is it worth taking as Higher Art can be counted towards LIR5 and if it will be taxing for triple Science students to take Higher Art ?

My child just started sec 1 too, my understanding is that there is a portal for students/parents, where u can find test papers from previous years. The child may print them for self practice, check back with teacher/consultation if in doubt as most papers do not come with answers.

Why not ask your daughter to check & clarify with her own school VP (Academic) first, whether this Sec 3 subject combination (Art + Triple Sciences ) is even allowed in the first case, because is so demanding !

If your girl still insist on doing Art, then she should drop back to Double Sciences, in order to accommodate the demands of Art
