When I advise my class on their choice of subject combination, I always ask them to weigh the benefits. One is their results. The other is their passion.
Hi, dd needs to choose pure humanities for her subject combination, either pure history or pure geography. She likes history and knows the content well but exam marks not great because she struggles with skills. Her geog A1, but she has no interest or passion and find it boring. Any advice which to take ?
Your DD's case is a classic example of what we love, we may not perform well.
I think to make it easier for DD, ask her if she plans to do anything History-related as a career. If her answer is \"no\", it shows that History is not really a passion but just a preference. So my advice is to choose Geography. Because it is not worth it to sacrifice her solid Geography results if she doesn't plan to do History in JC/Uni. I'm sure there are other subjects she finds boring as well, but because these are compulsory she has no choice. So why is Geography different? The main aim here is to achieve the best L1R5 points to be promoted to the next level. There she can afford to choose subjects she enjoys.
Someone mentioned the elective Humanities which is combined with Social Studies.
So an ideal combination for her is to do Pure Geography for results, and Elective History (weightage only 50%) for interest.
Do take note though, doing well for a subject in Lower Secondary need not necessarily guarantee the same for Upper Secondary, and vice-versa. Too many factors involved - higher level content, different coursework, different teacher etc. -

For IP schools that offer language art or even integrated math, when it comes to subject combination, will language art subject be combined together as a single exam paper or separate into English and Literature papers when taking the exam?

Which school are you asking for? It will be easier if you direct the question to the respective school thread, as IP schools are run independently.

I know schools like river valley or NJC? Not really any specific school. Just for discussion sake and I just want to know how it works.

I would suggest that you read up on these 2 schools in their school thread if your child is interested in entering those schools. As they are IP schools and are structured independently. Do attend their open house too!

Hi,
Hope this is the right place to ask this! I am wondering if my dd DSAed to a school, is there a way to transfer to another school if it is a non-medical reason? Thanks! -

\"If your child is admitted through DSA-Sec, they must commit to their chosen school for the duration of their programme. They are not allowed to transfer to another secondary school.\"

A)
Hi,
Hope this is the right place to ask this! I am wondering if my dd DSAed to a school, is there a way to transfer to another school if it is a non-medical reason?
Thanks!
Under DSA,
if is across 2 different Secondary schools -
1)
If your child is currently studying in an IP (A-level) Secondary school, want to transfer out to an \"International\" schools, Yes, still can, allowed. Because they are under different curriculum.
Eg.
say,
Pupil is unable to cope with Nanyang Girls' High or Hwa Chong IP academic rigor,
want to Transfer out to an \"International\" school,
Yes, this is allowed.
This had happened to some students before, in the past.
Note that \"International\" school fees, can be costly.
But No, not allowed, if -
2)
Pupil seek to transfer out from one IP-A-level Secondary school to another IP-A-level school , say,
eg.
from Cedar Girls Secondary to Raffles Institution,
in Year 5.
OR
say, attempt to seek Transfer from IP (Dunman High / River Valley High), both are SAP schools, to Hwa Chong JC, in Year 5.
Nor
3)
Pupil seek to Transfer out from an IP-A-level Secondary school to
IB ( SJI or ACS Independent ), in Year 5.
Nor
4)
attempt to seek Transfer out from an IP school to another O-level Secondary school , & vice versa.
============================
B) Under DSA,
If is within the SAME Secondary school -
A)
In \"Dual-track\" Secondary schools,
Eg.
In (Catholic High / St Nick / SCGS),
If students are unable to cope with IP academic rigor,
at end of Sec 2,
they can seek Transfer,
from IP to O-level track,
if vacancies arise.
B)
in certain IP-A-level schools like
Dunman High, RI, Hwa Chong, Nanyang Girs' High,
If students are unable to cope with IP academic rigor,
at end of Sec 2,
students can join the special \"on-demand O level\" classes, particularly set up (opened) for them, to take O level exam, instead of continue struggled inside IP.
