If we look at the bigger picture of education, we should aim for all-round development of the child. Our child may like to do (or we as parents may be pushing him to do) triple science, but I think it is a good idea to include at least one humanities subject. Even if our child decides to become a doctor or a scientist, he needs to understand the world around him and communicate with people. Some training in the arts will help him develop some EQ and express himself better.

All upper sec students have to take at least 1 humanities subject. At O level, then have to take at least the social studies+humanities subject, and some will also take a \"pure\" humanities subject in addition. For IP schools, soc studies is often a stand-alone subject, and students have to take at least another humanities subject.

I can only speak for my daughter's school - there was no \"combined\" humanities, only individual subjects. Soc studies was compulsory; students took one or more of the other humanities subjects depending on their subject combinations. Not sure about other IP schools.

Wow, Cedar IP does not need to read ELit & Social Studies as mandatory upper Sec subjects? That’s thoughtful.

Is it very common that schools these days offer pure chem and pure bio or comb chem/bio?

my child’s sch is offering the above subjects in the best 2 classes, on top of literature. combined phy/chem will only be offered in the 3rd and 4th class. the different combination bet the 3rd n 4th class is only one subject difference , i.e. to take art OR design tech.

My child is not good in language. her eng just got a C6. is taking phy/chem a better choice than chem/bio?

also, any advice between choosing art or design tech? she got A for both subjects so far. she has no preference which to choose, just want a subject tat is easier to score well.

but her question is, does design tech class has many more boys than girls?

I guess question you are trying to figure out is if it is better to take D&T or Art for O level subject.

Answer: both subjects involve portfolio prep and they account for 70% of the o level grade.
So my suggested approach will be as follows
                        1) ask your Child, which she prefers because interests play a great deal in the grades that they will get
                        2) if there is really no preference, i will suggest, try and find out the Past 3 years O level results for D&T and Art. That will give you an indication of the rigour the teachers in the school put it. Generally, for those getting A consistently, it is because they ( both teachers and students) burn their june holidays … perfecting the portfolio…

                        Hope this helps…
