What's the retention rate like for RI/HCI after JC1?
Are they mostly from the feeder schools?
the O level JAE students,
who have entered RI at
L1R5 nett (2 to 5) points.
Must be the IP students -

No idea but I don’t think we can make sweeping statements…..

Yes. We cannot generalize. Only the school knows. Frankly, if the pattern is so clear, this would have been easily arrested upstream.

Anything can happen to any child. One may have chosen an unsuitable subject combination (due to FOMO or parental or peer pressure), one could have met with a tragedy or affliction in personal life, get carried away by a certain distraction (opened a business or whatever), gone through a mental health challenge - something could just have happened. Many international students have had a very challenging past three years through Covid - some hardly had the chance to see family and all these things do affect a teenager.
The retention numbers in HCI and RI are small, but they do exist. -
I forgot to say, adjusting to JC is not an issue for most kids, but for some kids, it is surprisingly difficult. The social aspects, BGR for some, the great leap academically for some subjects - some find JC overwhelming and it all affects promo results.

Don’t think any posts are meant to be broad stroke. We are all just parents and common people; can only share our observations and experiences.
Know two cases personally to share.
One from top ip sch, killed oneself in upp sec. Asked for transfer to neighbourhood sec sch, but was not successful.
Mum was in denial and several years of suicide support group but family has been broken since.
Another also from top ip sch. Heavily tuition to get in. Went thru depression in ip sch for the whole time there. Low self esteem. Lucky, dad words pulled child conscious. Child said. managed to graduate after retention in year 6. Grad from uni and started working. Now, don’t even tell ppl he or she was from that sch.
In both cases, child got depression. -

I would say that our kids going through school in Singapore, regardless top school or not, will personally know of many friends and schoolmates who are receiving help for mental health struggles - it is not uncommon to hear of self harm. There will be kids who thrive, and those that do not, in every school.

Anedotes and generalisations aside, perhaps the lesson here is, whether RI or MI, we as parents should try to watch out for our kids health and well-being, how they are coping acacdemically and in non-academic ways, and be alert to support or intervene as the situation warrants. Things can go amazing or awry for any child in any place.

Yes, my older girl taught me to give up the Sg ideals which my brother and I achieved without too much stress and I used to regard as a given. I learned that my priority had to be my child's overall well-being, not her achievement. Parents have much more impact on kids than any school- it's a terrible, yet wonderful, responsibility.
