Hi julongmum,
Sure no problem, it’s my pleasure to share what I know. I can certainly understand that parents want the best for their child and every step in the education process is impt. Actually my mum was from Crescent while my sibling was from Nan Hua; so frankly speaking it’s kinda even. haha!
Heard about Nan Hua’s new Principal, Mrs Tan who has just recently took over. Although there’s a new Principal, I doubt that will be major changes that will rock the boat and with major programmes and systems already put in place by Dr. Foo (previous principal). Admittably, Dr. Foo has done a sterling job during his tenure and I am confident that Mrs Tan will continue his legacy in bringing Nan Hua forward too. Of course, 2010 is a crucial year for Nan Hua because NH will have a re-evaluation of its Autonomous Status and with the students, staff and parents working hand in hand, it should not be a problem.
I wish your daughter the very best during her tenure in NH and an enjoyable sec sch life. Should you have further queries, feel free to post and where possible, I will try my best to chip in. -
Hey , anyone signing up for the NH pc tablet programme?

With my dd we took a bus alighted along the AYE and walked to NH. It was exhausted for me. Do u know r there many students use the same route walk from that bus-stop (near clementi swim complex) to sch. -

hmmm we unlikely want the tablet, unless hear abt the 'pros' of having it.
1. no difference in the academic results of those who have it and those who dont
2. don't like dd to spend a lot of time viewing on the monitor, no good for eye sight
3. only abt 3 classes out of 11 opted for tablet
can parents share their experiences if your children carried the tablet in sch? tks -

Oh, my sibling has graduated from NH. Currently, that's the only way which my bro/most students get to school if you are coming from the AYE bus stops. Students will usually alight at the bus stop before the NUS High School bus stop and enter the school via the back gate. Alternatively, some students will walk from Clementi MRT Station OR alight at the bus stops B11/B12 along Commonwealth Ave West OR alight at B17/B18 along Clementi Road (with ref to Map: http://www.nanhuahigh.moe.edu.sg/cos/o.x?c=/wbn/pagetree&func=view&rid=8832).
As the immense distance students have to walk to school and their safety being of paramount concern to parents, the Parents Support Group (PSG) has broached this subject to the school earlier this year. The school has since referred this matter to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to review bus routes and pedestrian crossings along Clementi Ave 1. From what I concur, a paper has been put up to create a pedestrian crossing at NHHS's back-gate along Clementi Ave 1 where a school zone will be created to better safeguard students' safety. It will be implemented within the next 2 years pending a further site study by LTA in 2010.
In addition, the school has also suggested to LTA to create a bus service to ply the route of Clementi Ave 1, servicing students from NHHS and also NUS High School. This is still subject to LTA's approval but NUS High School has also thrown their support behind this project.
In my view, I think the projects should be able to pass through although am not so sure the progress of them currently. Perhaps, you may wish to check with the school or the Parents Support Group for further updates on this issue. -

calypo, once again thanks for the info. It would be a great relief if both projects can pass through and carried out ASAP to benefit the students both from NHHS and NUSHS.Hi julongmum

I did notice on the side gate, however, there is the road divider in between the 2 way traffic, students across the road can't simply access to it. Will find out more fr the sch in near future.
btw, does yr bro carry tablet to sch? what's yr view abt the tablet program? -

No worries; glad to be of help. Oh my brother didn't use the Tablet PC because it was only introduced around 3 years ago for Sec 1 students.
Admittably, I don't see any difference between the grades of students with Tablet PCs and those who don't. Getting the Tablet PC is a new education initiative to get students affiliated with the use of IT in lessons and in my opinion, probably to gear them up for future use of laptops in Universities. Based on what you've said, since only 3 out of 11 classes are using the Tablet PCs and it is not made compulsory by the school, I don't think it is necessary to get one. The first reason is because the Tablet PC may become a distraction for students in school or during lessons. Moreover, it is an added responsibility for the child to take care of their belongings because there is a risk of losing the Tablet PC in school. One will also need to supervise the child closely in relation to the dangers of the Internet and PC gaming.
Of course, there are benefits to the situation, in that the Tablet PC opens new avenues in which teachers can teach lessons to garner the students' interest in the subject. Admittably, the lessons are really interesting with the use of Tablet PC as I've seen it before. It also builds up the students' IT capabilities; although by now, I believe every Gen Y kid is already more than familiar with computers and Internet.
Overall, I am not really a Tablet PC advocate as I don't see it as a necessity for students at this Sec Sch stage. Nonetheless, it's a good initiative by MOE/NHHS to open up newer teaching pedagogies and inject vibrancy into the education system. I think it will be best to express your concerns to the sch staff and see whether if there are policies in place to address your concerns. Lastly, checking with other parents in the Parents' Support Group (PSG) for their opinion will also help one to make the right decision. -

Regarding the road dividing fence, it was only built recently to discourage students from jaywalking/cutting across the road; although some still cross the road in the area(s) before the road dividing fence due to convenience... -
