What is the secret of studying literature ?

      Isn't it very tough ?
I don't think its tough. It can be interesting because I heard from my dd, they have to act out Sing to the Dawn with their own created dialogue.

        Hi VitoRelax,

I have alot to write about the 'secret' of studying literature. But I think this quote that I found sums up pretty well:

\"...for what he[anyone] reads as a task will do him little good\"

This is taken from 'The Life of Samuel Johnson', a biography about a well-known English author who died in the late 1700s, can't remember exact year lah...

Anyway, this is a mistake I made for the briefest time when in the Uni. I was so into getting good grades, that I forgot for a tiniest bit to read to enjoy the book, so much so it became a chore .... and that was affecting my astute analytical skills šŸ˜„ šŸ˜‰

        Also, something to ponder upon:

Do you know that we are constantly analyzing ie asking the \"why\" and the \"do you think\" questions to name a few examples - The movies we watched ie \"do you think so and so was suited for the role?\" The latest gossip ie \"eh, you think Tiger Woods is an idiot for cheating on his wife?\" or just plain politics \"s_ _ _ man, why did the gahment raise the price of electricity again?\" šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜‰

You know what I mean rite?? I mean if a discussion can start from the above mentioned topics, with the inclusion of evidence from other media sources that you have listened to/read, or better still your personal opinion based on the media sources you have read - then, in a way, you are doing 'literature' because these are the skills you need to use when you read the book. You have to try to relate with the person or the situation. Its not difficult then, to see why to those who are a fan of it, to agree wholeheartedly, that \"Literature is the food for life that sustains and feeds the soul.\" šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜‰

Now, for the life of me, I can't remember who/where the source for the last quote is šŸ˜„

My dd told me, Sing to the Dawn context and lanugage use, can be very simple and the book itself is very thin. However, the morale of the story is very strong. I open up my dd's Sing to the Dawn and suprise, so many highlights, notes scribble everywhere. This book alone, they read at least 3 to 4 times, repeat and repeat.

          Hi daisyt,

You DD is so SPOT on !!! šŸ˜„

Her teacher told them, a good piece of writing is not one that contains all the chim chim words. Its one that is simple but yet strong. Easy to understand, yet transfer the message clear. Sing to the Dawn is such.

Why don't we list the books we did for literature for everybody's benefit? We can read the books for leisure and be more chim. DS2 did Charlotte's Web in sec 1 and DS3 enjoyed reading it at P3. I of course enjoyed it at 40+ years old. šŸ˜‰

              I did
              1. The Crocodile Died Twice
              2. The Good Earth
              3. Room with a View
              4. Far from the Maddening Crowd
              5. Twelfth Night

              other family members did
              1. Animal Farm
              2. Pride and Prejudice
              3. To kill a Mocking Bird
              4. Charlotte's Web
              5. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
              6. Romeo and Juliet

              and some forgotten titles.

                Hi tutormum,

                Fantastic idea šŸ˜„ šŸ˜„ šŸ˜„ .

                Here my list:

                1. Julius Ceasar (familiar with \"et tu, Brutus\")
                2. Things Fall Apart (excellent book if you want an introduction to the African culture (eg practice of circumcision, tribal culture etc..)
3.King of the Castle (deals with bullying, lonliness, issues that a teen can relate to)

                    Hi emerald,

Both schools MAY use the same titles, but not the same texts. Some non-IP schools may teach using the adapted/simplified version of the shakespearean plays.
                    Hi autumnbronze

Is there any literature guide ?
