Dear Math Masters, Great Math Teachers and Great Problem Solvers,

      Help!!!

First I would like to thank all of you for the great insight and solutions to the very difficult math problems we all face daily.

      I too have a math problem but it is not a math question, the problem is how to \"teach\" math? When my child is having problem with a math problem, do I ;

      A) show my child how to get the solution straight away?
      B) show my child half way to the solution?
      C) don't show anything but keep hinting (but how to hint?)?
      D) don't do anything and both of us just sit there and wait until we both go old or go crazy?

Please advice, thanks thanks in a million in advance!
There's no Model answers to the Qns above but will share what I do with DS:
      1) let him do the Qn first.
      2) if he has the answer, check the method cos sometimes it could be a fluke.
      3) if he hits the wall, will show him model if any, n if he could get the clue sentence like 4u= 40, etc.will let him figure the rest. If not, will guide him all the way.
      4) will take note of Qns he needs my guidance, during revision, will change the numbers and let him try. If I can find similar Qns in assessment books or papers, will sieve out n let him try until he know how to tackle that type of qn.

Just my two cents' worth, hope this helps šŸ˜„

Hi, please help in this question:

Tin A, Tin B and Tin C are required to paint a complete wall. If only Tin A is used, we are short of 7 litres. If only Tin B is used, we are short of 5 litres. If only tin C is used, we are short of 3 litres. How many litres of paint is required to paint a complete wall?

Hi I think can be solved in the following way:

If only Tin A is used, we are short of 7 litres implies that
      B + C = 7 litres--- (1)
Thus following similar logic, we will have
      A + C = 5 litres--- (2),
      A + B = 3 litres ---(3)

      Adding (1), (2) and (3), we have

      2A + 2B + 2C = 15 litres
      A + B + C = 15/2 = 7.5 litres

      Hi, another question:

Tan, Lim and Wong had some pens to sell. Tan had the least no. of pens. Wong's no. of pens was 30% less than Lim's. After Tan and Lim had each sold 50% of their pens, Lim had 95 more pens than Tan. If the three men had a total of 330 pens left, what is the total no. of pens they had at first?
      At first

      Wong---70%
      Lim---100%

After T and L sold 1/2 of their share,

      Lim---50%
      Tan---95 less than 50%
      Wong---70%

      Thus, 50% + 50% + 70% ----330+ 95
170%---425 (Wong + Lim at first)
      1%----2.5
      Tan---2x ( 50 x 2.5 - 95) = 60

      Total at first----60 + 425 = 485

Hi, need help to cross check the ans to this question:

Two boxes, A and B, contain some red and blue beads. In box A, the ratio of the no. Of red beads to the no. of blue beads is 2:1. In box B, the ratio of the no. Of red beads to blue beads is 1:3. Box A has thrice as many beads as Box B.

      A) find the ratio of the no. of Red beads in box A to the no. of blue beads in box B.

      B) if 105 red beads are taken out from box A and placed in box B, the ratio of the no. of the red beads to the no. of blue beads in box B becomes 3:2. What is the total no. of beads in the 2 boxes?

      Our working leads ans A is -- 8:1, ans B is -- 480.

Appreciate anyone helps if the ans is correct. Many thanks.
I think he answer to part a should be 8:3. Part b is correct šŸ˜„

      kiasuaunt:
Hi - nd help with this:

      1. There were 610 pupils in a school. After 3/5 of the girls and 145 boys left the school, the new ratio of the number of boys to the girls became 11:8.
a.Find the number of boys in the school at first.
b.Find the total number of pupils in the school in the end.

2.Geraldine and Amy went shopping for groceries together. They had $162.50 with them. Amy spent 2.5 times as much money as Geraldine. The amount of money Geraldine had left was $16 more than what she had spent. She had 4 times as much money left as Amy.

a.How much money did Geraldine spent?

b.How much money did Amy have at first?

      Thank you.

      1) Since 2/5 of the girls equals to 8u, thus the total number of units for girls at first must be 8/2 x 5 = 20u

      Therefore, girls at first---20u, boys--11u + 145

      31u + 145 --- 610
      1u --- (610 -145)/31 =15

      (a) No. of boys at first---15 x 11 + 145 = 310

      (b) No. of pupils in the end--- 15 x 19 = 285

      2) Ratio for money spent---A : G = 5u : 2u
      Geraldine left---2u + $16
      Amy left--- (2u + $16)/4 = 0.5u + $4

      Geraldine at first--- 2u + 2u + $16 = 4u + $16
      Amy at first----5u + 0.5u +$4 = 5.5u + $4

      Thus, 4u + $16 + 5.5u + $4 --- $162.50
      9.5 u ---$$142.50
      1u ---$15

      a) Geraldine spent--2 x $15 = $30

      b) Amy at first ---5.5 x $15 + $4 = $86.50

      Hope this helps šŸ˜„

Car A left Singapore for Penang. Car B left Penang for Singapore at the same time using the same route. 3 hrs after the two cars had set off, they were 760 km apart. 5 hrs after they had set off, the distance between the two cars was 400 km. How many hrs after setting off would the two cars meet?

      Thanks.
I got 7 2/9 hrs as the answer, doesn't look very correct, is it? :scratchhead:

      Hi all,

I received a Chinese enrichment course sign up for P1 level. Any feedback if it's good & wonder anyone knows how many students in a class & if it's effective?

It's by Yi Chen Culture Service Centre.

      Hi i3mum,
I enrolled my DS a couple of years back in the same enrichment course by Yi Chen( DS is in P4 now). He did not seem to like it, they do a lot of reciting and memorising....I sent him back then just to occupy his time on Wednesday afternoons, is it going to be conducted on Wednesday afternoons as well for this year? Personally, i think sending your child to Chinese enrichment courses outside the school would be a better choice. I sent DS to Tien Hsia (CCK) and he liked it a lot, the teachers are great.

      Hope this helps šŸ˜„

      GiftedGem:
      Hi RachelSmiley,

Personally, I look at it from a different perspective. From macro view, this statistic offers a comprehensive view on individual school's strengths. On top of it, it provides us a view which are the subjects that the kids are having difficulties in coping with as a whole.

From micro view, it instills motivation to my DD. She is putting in concerted effort to strengthen her subject weakness.

Merely comparing of statistic does not serve its purpose which I believe parents in this kaisu forum are not looking purely from this perspective.

      Well said, GiftedGem :goodpost:

I have not shown DS the stats yet but looking at the averages of the various schools for maths, then did i realise how high the standard is for Maths :nailbite:
Hence, will definitely do my utmost to improve DS's math :nunchuk:
