RE: Any methods to train kids on critical thinking skills?
If your child can ask Why for every question, and you can give half the answer, and get your child to find the other half, you have a good start.

RE: What should I expect from a GP tutor?
I would say that a GP tutor has to focus on two aspects in teaching GP. One is skills. Skills in analysing and framing the essay question, paragraph development, using logic and other persuasive techniques just to name a few. The second aspect is knowledge. Learning about tons and tons of new things is NOT essential. Application is more important.
Just my point of view: if the teacher is not giving 2-3 different articles (from different sources) on the same issue, then I think using the article for discussion is useless. I can elaborate more on this, but I think that just making intelligent talk during tuition is not the way to approach GP. Learning to see the big picture is important. What is even more important is to apply the big picture to specific situations. -
RE: * Tampines Meridian JC (TMJC)
MJC is not mid-tier. It is top 6. SAJC is mid-tier. (BTW I’m not affiliated with MJC - just keeping it real).

RE: Private tuition: Why Singapore education can't do without it
Yes, definately more top school students taking tuition. Its scary!
On the face of it, our exam system is not equal, how can someone in Tampines Secondary School compete with SJI or ACS? Both have 4 years to take O levels, but both have significantly unequal resources helping them for exams. The same goes for A Level exam. How can PJC student compete with ACJC or NJC? Tuition for top school students just propels them further, and they learn exponentially faster. -
RE: MJC or CJC
both schools have strong school spirit, but MJC has consistently bettered its scores over CJC. If you are going to MJ or CJ based on the shade of blue, then I think MJC shade is also better.

RE: Do you think there is still a future for our kids...
Unless the kids can attain professional degrees, become adaptable, show passion and be able to constantly evolve in their field, they will have a regular future in Singapore. Many will become teachers, salesman, food-stall operators, admin workers, taxi drivers, waiters, ushers and security guards.
The competition from foreigners is great. In fact great is an understatement. The foreigners are willing to work harder for less money, and that marginalizes Singaporeans, particularly those that aspire the 5C’s.
Just my opinion, it may not be a fact. -
RE: Information on Group Tuiton
Next time speak to tutors. Ask about their teaching style. Ask how they handle discipline matters or when homework is not done. MOE teacher does not mean they can teach. They have gone through a course, but it does not mean they can teach.
Parents have to take a proactive role in finding tutors. Role of tutors is to close the gap in a topic/subject. Role of tutors is not to teach, but the system in Singapore is such that tutors end up teaching as well.
Just learn from experience and move on. All the best. -
RE: All About A Levels
Frankly, all JC the same (except for RI). All follow MOE guidelines. All prepare students for A level exam. Go with distance, cause in the end, many just end up taking tuition to supplement what they know/dont know. SRJC has done wonders. COP pretty high this year. Don’t discount the lower ranked JC’s. They have a good pool of teachers who are dedicated and passionate, as opposed to higher ranked JC’s, where the teachers rest on their laurels, and expect the student to do all the work and then take credit.

RE: Do universities look only at grades for admission?
Depends on the ranking and history of the uni. Many in USA and UK will welcome you if you can pay the tuition fee. Tread well.
