I wish I could have been there. I’m sure many wish to be there as well. We all have to stand together and speak up, otherwise we will just be relegated to becoming keyboard warriors. If this is organised again, I’ll surely make time - even if its just for 30 minutes.

RE: How to prepare for the KI test?
I can tell you that the number of pple in RI taking KI is between 20-28. And even they have problems with it. One issue is critical analysis and being able to apply theories of arguments and fallacies.

RE: Subject Combination in JC
Take a subject if you will enjoy it, but it is also important to place it in context of what you hope to do in Uni.

RE: Your Opinions on H2 History/Geog?
H2 History can be taxing and there is a lot of material to cover. H2 Geog is more manageable, and you learn things that are applicable to GP/KI, eg social migration, urban excess, etc.
Dunno what career opportunities you talking about ? You mean with A Level cert and with focus in History or Geog? Washing cars, working at McD, distribute flyers, drive taxi…plenty of career opp.
If you alluded to prospects in Uni, then Arts & Soc Science will welcome you. -
RE: Subject Combination in JC
Firstly you have to qualify for KI. Your grades plus diagnostic test will determine if you are suited. If you intend to go overseas to study, KI or GP does not matter. Uni’s overseas are quite slack. Math is important. Take H1. Locally KI will stand in better light than GP (all else being equal).

RE: Is this normal relationship?
Firstly he needs to agree to be helped. Have to identify why he drinks. Is it a form of escapism? Is he avoiding something? Can he not face something? Is it an addiction that cannot be let-go easily? There are many issues, and each one will have a different approach. But first he must agree to be helped.
I suggest you call James Cook University (Upper Thomson Road), and ask to speak to someone in the psychology clinic. They offer very very low cost counselling and psychology help. Cognitive behaviour therapy is one way to solve an addiction issue. Building close family bonds is another. If you go to a professional counsellor, it’ll cost $$. If you ask CDC for counselling help, they will dig deep. JCU is really good. Call them, they will help you.
I however would like to applaud you for asking for help, and give you a brotherly hug to tell you that if you want change and if you seek change, then change will happen. Just be strong and persevere. Your spouse should know how much you love him, and if he love you one bit, he will change.
Good luck. God Bless. -
RE: All About Secondary School English Enrichment
Centre does not produce grade ‘A’ students. Consistent hard work by student does.
If you like to see your child in a lecture with 100+ students and tutorial of 20-25+ students go to SOT. LL is so so if you can get a teacher or schedule that does not change. Class size is 10-14 students. They tend to dish out notes which can be dated. They have 2 JC teachers that teach, but if those teachers cannot teach their class in school, how can they tutor? (I say cannot teach in school because their students go elsewhere for GP tuition).
Please note: teaching and tutoring are two very different things.
Many other tutors around. Do a simple online search. Make phone calls. Talk to tutors. Ask about pedagogy.
Anyone who says I guarantee ‘A’ grade must be durian seller. All the best. -
RE: help....wife is earning much more than me
Just love your wife, and all your (money) problems will go away. Love her for what she truly is, not because she earn more than you. If you earn more than her, will it give her reason to be paiseh? Does she mock you? No right? Just love her, maybe it is fated that she take care of you, and for that, you should love her.

RE: All About Market Rates of Private Tutors
meinteel:
IMHO, 365psych's quote isnt very complete. Most MOE/NIE trained teachers charge around $30-$55 even if its primary school. Rates depend on popularity, years of experience and position level (e.g. Teacher, Senior Teacher, HOD, Master Teacher etc)
HiHAPPYH:
Pri 20-30 per hour
Sec 35-45 per hour
JC 50-70 per hour
all above rates depending on experience of teacher and location. Anything more is a rip-off ! (Of course some tutor charge less).
BTW, lawyers charge $150 per hour for professional legal advice. If you are paying a tutor more than that, might as well hire a lawyer. At least you can proudly say, my son's tutor is a lawyer!
Two of my friends pay $40 per hour (home tuition) for primary levels.
Otherwise, I would agree that psych's rates are pretty much the industry's current charges.
I got say mah,
\"all above rates depending on experience of teacher and location\"
MOE/NIE trained means little to me these days, as 'A' level students can teach a subject better than a trained teacher. They understand student issues and needs better. Most MOE/NIE trained teachers also do not apply what they have been taught in NIE - so why should they command a high price? Just because they have a teachers union card? Anyway, lets keep this for another thread.
If you want real super teacher, ask if they can teach according to the principles of Blooms' Taxonomy or Gagne (pronounced as Ga-nay). No point paying high if teacher/tutor pedagogy is not clear. Parents MUST ask all teachers/tutors, \"What is your pedagogy and how do you aim to instill subject matter confidence in my child.\" You will scare away many tutors, but the left over can truthfully answer.
