I am looking for K2 to P3 children to form a new abacus class with my 2012 primary 1 dd.

The class is conducted in Soroban Education Centre at Orchard Road.
ds started training with the two teachers (Ms Wong and Ms Yen) in their Bukit Panjang branch since k2 (now he is going to primary 5) and I am very happy with the programme because (1) The class was personally taught by the two teachers throughout the years he was with them. (2) The two teachers are highly enthusiastic about abacus themselves - to the extent that they have set up their own personal abacus museum! (3) I like the finger abacus technique when ds first started his training with them, I think it has helped ds very much in laying a strong foundation in maths operation.

I can't fit into their new class schedule in Bukit Panjang Plaza. But according to teacher Ms Wong, they are also willing to start new classes on Sat 2.00-3.30pm or Sun 11.00am -12.30pm. More information about their programme on their web site:
      http://www.soroban.com.sg/about-us.html

      Thank you!

Hi, anyone has children doing a family tree project?

My ds went the family tree project once in P1 under moral edu and p5 under sci. Just paste the family pic and write a bit on them.

Thanks for your reply. This year it is a primary 4 individual project for social studies. I wonder how many projects must they do for ss?
I think her strength is in the quality of the books she has written. Her approach is rather drilling based, in my opinion. Very academic, result oriented and systematic. If this type of course is what you are looking for, maybe you can give her a try. Personally I prefer a more 'lively' type of lesson if available, something to inspire my child.

Hey babysz, i find if you're looking for 'lively' type of lesson, i would really recommend miss er (9655 5836). she coach e/m/s and her english lessons really impresses me - she manage to cover oral, compre, compo, synthesis, everything plus creative writing and i see the improvements in my kids work and interest in her worksheets. her way of teaching is very open and vibrant, more on participative plus understanding than just rote learn. my kids been with her awhile now and can see they have develop a passion for reading/writing šŸ˜„
Thanks Hopeful4future, I'll give her a call.

dd attended one centre in Bukit Timah which teaches children from 2 and a half years old to skate. I signed her up when she was two and a half yrs old together with her pri school big brother because I could not tahan all her pleadings. The centre said that they could teach the kids to skate after only lesson and they did. Both kids were able to skate after only one lesson. No fanciful stunts, though.

No, the kids do not forget how to skate once they learnt them - at least not after half a year.

      4) Planet A Star : ds attends the programme conducted in a condo in Bukit Timah only during school holidays. The teacher, Rosalind (spelling?), speaks English very well and has published a number of assessment books on this subject. She teaches all the students personally.

Ms Rosalind teaches creative writing based on her books. Do you think it helps with 5 days' lessons? Do you think the books are useful? The fee is the most expensive among the 4. When did your ds attend the programme? I am thinking to register my kid as well. Need some advice. TIA.

Sorry I missed out this one. ds attended two times in total: once right before primary one and once before primary 2. I intend to send him to her class this holiday too. šŸ˜„

      hi Snowz,

Yes, she teaches from her books most of the time. When I went to fetch my ds home from lesson one day, though, I saw some notes written on her whiteboard. Those were strategies on creative writing which I didn't see those on the books we bought, so she probably also taught them something extra if you take her lessons.

As mentioned in my post prior to this, I do not have any basis for comparison when it comes to the learning effect, but I think the lessons should be helpful. I do not know to what extent it helps though, sorry I can't offer much information in this. We speak Chinese at home and I seldom interfere with ds's English learning, I worry that the more I interfer, the worst things become. ds also has mild dyslexia and so I don't find getting him to memorise vacabs and things useful even if I want to help. He will just forget everything very quickly. In short, I have to rely on others totally.

Not sure if this information is useful: When ds got back his SA2 paper last year, he made a number of mistakes. But he had perfect scores in cloze passage, comprehension and only lost one mark due to carelessness in the story writing section. As I did not send him for English tuitions in comprehensiona and cloze passages, I think it is fair to contribute the perfect scores in these sections largely to her teaching. HTH.
